This committee has been forcibly closed down by Macmillan for being too small. If you want to support local cancer support in Gloucestershire feel free to visit Churchdown ABC and follow on his travels to help the people of Gloucestershire affected by cancer.

I have just checked and my last post has reached nearly 3,000 people. Many have kiked and supported our original aims. We have set up "Churchdown ABC". ABC stands for Affected By Cancer (thanks to Swindon ABC who approved our use). Under this very small "charity" (I think we must refer to ourselves as 'Community Support Organisation'), with all money raised staying locally, to support those affected by cancer. If you want to follow us, please go to the page Churchdown ABC like us, follow us and spread the word. I am hoping that Jon Culshaw will continue to offer his services and all news of another Evening with Jon Culshaw will appear on that page in future. Thank you all for your support and kindness.

It is with great sadness that I am informing you all that the Churchdown Committee for Macmillan Cancer Support has been closed down after some twenty years, by Macmillan.

It appears that we are too small and do not conform with their new governance rules.

Ros and I formed the committee to serve the community by fundraising, informing and educating on cancer and cancer support. We have always been volunteers and have willingly donated our time and effort to support those in need. All money (around £50,000) has been retained within Gloucestershire and we know that has meant so much to all who have so generously donated.

Our thanks also go to Linda and Maureen who each acted as Treasurer in the early days and of course, to Mick our current Treasurer who has the horrible task of shutting us down formally.

We could have transferred to "Volunteer" status, but that meant that money would not be retained locally and after consultation with many supporters realise just how much that aspect meant to you all.

Macmillan could offer no role that would allow a local aspect and we have taken the difficult decision to leave Macmillan entirely and find other areas to donate our time and effort.

This page will be closed on 29th June 2018 (my birthday). We tried.

Congratulations to the IAM Portal Project Team at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust for being shortlisted for the prestigious Macmillan Excellence Award recognising their inspirational work supporting people affected by cancer in the area.
The portal, which was jointly funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and Teenage Cancer Trust, is improving the cancer journey for teenagers and young people by making their voices central to their care. Users can also utilise the portal to find a comprehensive range of age-appropriate information, and to contact their medical team with any concerns.
Jamie Cargill from the team says, ‘There wasn’t anything already out there, so we had to develop something of our own. We wanted to create a digital platform that offered access to good advice, particularly around psychological and social support, and that allowed patients to contact the team and tell them what they’re worried about.’
The team were nominated by colleagues in the Innovation Excellence (Team) category which recognises people whose vision and commitment has made a lasting difference to the quality of services offered to people affected by cancer.
Good luck guys! The winner will be announced on November 16th.

This information is for anyone who looks after a friend or family member who has both cancer and dementia. It is a practical guide to caring for someone living with both conditions. We also have information for people who have cancer and dementia available as a booklet or audiobook.

Visit the link and search for Trevor Howard. The last time I visited, I was the only one with that name.

I visited Golden Valley Probus today in Churchdown, to deliver a talk on "The Engineer and the Environment". As a result, my fee of £20 was donated to Macmilan Cancer Support. Many thanks to Probus for making me feel welcome.
