Please find below a news release from People First of Canada about a story out of London, Ontario, that has again raised serious concerns about the medical assistance in dying (MAiD) law in Canada.

Ninety disability and mental-health organizations are calling for the federal government to permanently halt the expansion of Canada's assisted su***de law for individuals whose sole condition is mental illness.

The groups, including Inclusion Canada and its provincial and territorial partners, have sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Justice Minister Sean Fraser and Health Minister Marjorie Michel, asking them to introduce legislation that prevents the expansion of .

A temporary pause on that expansion is due to expire next March.

Inclusion Canada has talked with several news outlets this week about the letter and also underscored why the separate pathway of MAID for persons with disabilities must also be repealed.

From 2021-2024, 2,050 people died from Track 2 MAID according to the most recent statistics available from Health Canada.

We are celebrating a beloved employee for his contributions and dedication to inclusive employment.

Congratulations to Frank Fagan who has reached 10 years service with Inclusion Canada. Based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Frank is assistant national director with the Ready Willing and Able (RWA) Program.

RWA is a highly successful national initiative that increases the labor force participation of people with intellectual disabilities or on the autism spectrum. RWA engages, educates and supports employers in hiring people while also supporting job seekers in their pursuit of meaningful employment by connecting them with community agencies and services.

RWA is a partnership with Inclusion Canada, the Autism Alliance of Canada and their member organizations.

Presenting Frank with a gift of thanks is Inclusion Canada CEO Krista Carr.

More than 90 disability and mental health organizations from across the country are registering their concerns about the further expansion of Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) law.

The groups are opposed to MAiD access being widened to people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness. They have shared this position in an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Justice Minister and Attorney General Sean Fraser, and Health Minister Marjorie Michel. The letter was copied to the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying (AMAD) comprised of MPs and Senators.

Inclusion Canada is one of the signatories to the letter. People with disabilities and mental illness who face poverty, housing insecurity, social isolation, and barriers to timely health care need help and hope — not MAiD.

Please share this letter with your local Member of Parliament and Senator and urge them not to expand assisted su***de and also repeal the discriminatory Track 2 pathway to MAiD that is only for people with disabilities.

Today is the International Day of Families. It highlights the important issues regarding the wellbeing of families like health, education, gender equality, rights for children and adults and community inclusion. Established by the United Nations in 1993, it celebrates the importance of families and recognizes the different family structures.

Today is a day to reflect on the role families play in building strong, connected communities. Inclusion Canada itself was founded by families and would not exist today without their leadership, advocacy and determination.

This year’s theme is “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing.” Whether chosen or biological, families are central in the lives of persons with intellectual disabilities. Together they continue to face significant inequalities in accessing essential services, adequate income supports, inclusive education, and safe & accessible housing.

Listening and learning from families will help governments and communities identify meaningful solutions and respond more efectivbely to the barriers they continue to face.

Please join us in continuing this vitally important work.
