Over 5 days inside a busy maternity hospital in Lima, Peru, 21 young patients were carefully screened, and 16 children went on to receive surgery for strabismus. Strabismus is a condition that causes the eyes to misalign.

These children, aged between two and thirteen, had each been living with vision problems that were negatively impacting their childhoods. For many of them, this was their first real chance to access specialist eye care.

Among them was a little girl called Naya. Learn more about her story:

Thanks to Orbis Future Vision Leader Vinh Pham, from Université de Montréal, who organized a fundraiser for Orbis Canada by offering free lifesaving classes! These fundraisers help us continue our work improving global eye health and we are so appreciative of our OFVLs for their dedication to our mission.

"For me, this fundraiser was a simple way to connect my background in lifesaving education with my growing interest in global eye health. I also hoped it could help raise awareness about the importance of accessible eye care and encourage others to contribute in whatever way they can," he says.

Across Zambia’s Copperbelt Province, Orbis and our partners are helping to bring essential eye care to communities where distance, limited resources, and low awareness often stand in the way of treatment. From frontline health workers travelling long distances by bicycle to children returning to school after receiving sight-saving care, these stories highlight the life-changing impact of local training, equipment, and community support.

Discover how Orbis is helping strengthen eye care systems and transform lives in rural Zambia.

Through the Qatar Creating Vision (QCV) project—supported by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and delivered by Orbis Zambia—these obstacles are being overcome so that more communities in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province can receive the quality care they need.

Meet Charly Tran from Montreal. He is a volunteer member of our Orbis Canada Advisory Council, who was motivated to participate by the desire to support global eye health. Charly, who has a background in ophthalmology, comes from a family of refugees who came to Canada following the Vietnam War. That lens has coloured his experience and made him dedicated to projects supporting displaced populations. His work now is in helping newcomers to Canada navigate the healthcare system.

Charly hopes his background in health systems and his passion for supporting vulnerable populations will be an asset to the Council. He also wants to do more to educate the public about the work Orbis does beyond the Flying Eye Hospital. “The Flying Eye Hospital is the crown jewel, but there’s a lot of sustainability work that’s being done through Orbis that I think people will think is very important.”
