The garbage burning industry in Ontario is relying on outdated information to sell incineration and 'energy-from-waste' as a greener option to landfills. We looked into the numbers and incineration is the MOST expensive, toxic, and climate-harming way to deal with waste.

Ontario's air pollution standards are also lower than other jurisdictions despite requests to raise them. Peel Public Health has expressed concerns that the Brampton incinerator will meet or go over Ontario's existing standards and expose the Brampton (and Etobicoke) community to pollutants that cause cancer, heart, and lung problems.

Further, according to their own data 66% of what is going into this incinerator is recycling or organic material, which shouldn't be going into the garbage or getting burned at all. TEA's Emily Alfred explains on CBC's Metro Morning here: https://loom.ly/oKTENmY

March 26 was a win for Toronto's trees! Yesterday Councillor Amber Morley said: "This is an existential issue. We need shade. We need cooling. We need clean air." And we couldn't agree more.

City Council will strengthen Toronto’s tree protection bylaw, preventing countless large, healthy trees on private land from getting cut down. This means:
- Stronger fines and enforcement for illegally cutting down large healthy trees on private land
- Special protection for our biggest healthy trees, with a new "distinctive tree" status
- Extra support for people to help protect large trees on their properties
- Support from City Council to protect hundreds of thousands more trees under the bylaw in the future.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak up for Toronto's trees, including , .saxe, and

UPDATE: We spoke up for tree protections and City Hall listened! Councillors voted yesterday at the Infrastructure and Environment Committee to add more tree enforcement and monitoring to City staff's proposal. Full City Council will vote between March 25-27, send a message telling them to support this plan! ⬇️ https://www.torontoenvironment.org/speak_up_to_protect_torontos_trees

Toronto’s urban forest is irreplaceable. These trees bring shade, clean air, flood protection, climate benefits, and health benefits. And more than half of them are on private land.

Toronto City Council will be voting soon on a plan to strengthen protections for private trees. This includes stronger enforcement for illegally cutting down large healthy trees, expanding the number of protected trees, and giving special protection to the biggest, oldest, hardest-working trees.

We need your voice to help make sure this plan gets approved. Speak up here: https://loom.ly/sWXPztc

The City of TO is doing another survey to help shape waste diversion programs in the future. Please share your thoughts to show support for a zero waste strategy that makes it easy for everyone to keep all kinds of waste out of the garbage, that supports better diversion in multi-unit buildings, that uses policies to prevent waste and most of all, that follows the true Zero Waste Hierarchy (and doesn’t include incineration).

You can hear more about it and ask questions at the City’s public online meeting today, Feb 11 at 7pm, register here: https://loom.ly/aIrG6VU

The City is collecting feedback on the 10-year (2026-2036) Reduction and Diversion Plan, which includes proposed actions the City is considering to increase waste diversion, reduction and reuse through policies, programs and education.
