Community. ✨ Last week we had the privilege of spending two days with this wonderful group of people. The OCIC Symposium 2026 brought together old friends and new friends for conversations around the many forms that global citizenship and locally-led development can take.

The Symposium was undertaken with financial support from the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, in partnership with the Department of Global Development Studies, University of Toronto Scarborough, and with additional contributions from Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) and TakingITGlobal, who have supported their international and national partners in joining us in person. Thank you.

Thank you as well to Acted, Acted Canada, ADRA Canada, Alongside Hope, Bridge Building Group, CPAR, Community World Service Asia, Connected North, CPAR Ethiopia, FaciliChange, Fairtrade Canada, Good Neighbours Canada, Good Neighbours Cameroon, Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, Partners in Health Canada, Plan International Canada, Presbyterian World Service & Development, Results Canada, Salanga, SATHEE, Services in Action, Spirit in Action, World Renew Canada, World Renew Bangladesh, YSMENA Program at the Western University, the independent experts and contributors, OCIC Board Directors and consultants, members, youth participants, volunteers, staff, and our broader community for your contributions and active participation.

Your engagement and commitment to strengthening global citizenship through shared learning, inclusive dialogue, and collective efforts toward more equitable, community-driven change provides inspiration and hope that a better world is possible.

We weren't expecting our Symposium 2026 to have a stand out slide, but as people are sharing their reflections, this one image has clearly been resonating.

Zeina Shaaban shared this on a slide, using it to illustrate the connection between social justice and global health, while discussing the work and philosophy of Partners In Health Canada.

This image is the original artwork of Evelyn Rogan and Madhukar Pai. We invite you to read their article 'Global health: the long road from saviorism to justice': https://speakingofmedicine.plos.org/2026/03/26/global-health-the-long-road-from-saviorism-to-justice/

That's a wrap on our Symposium 2026!

We have a lot of thanks to give and reflections to share, but for now we'll leave you with these words and music from the wonderful .

The OCIC Symposium 2026 is getting close!

We're very excited to have these amazing speakers join us for our opening plenary. Hear how their organizations are putting locally-led principles into practice to foster more equitable, inclusive and sustainable change.

We'll explore the six core principles of locally-led development with Jakub Nemec of Salanga, followed by hearing real-world examples with Marie Meloche of The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, Sopheap Sreng of ADRA Canada and Dr. Felagot Taddese of Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR), in conversation with our very own Shehara Athukorala, demonstrating how these principles are applied in practice across global health, feminist system change, and community-led conservation.

Led by Jakub, participants will also take part in an interactive gallery walk to reflect on the six principles and explore how they connect with their work.

Date & Time: Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 1:00pm - 4:30pm ET
& Friday, April 10, 2026 from 8:30am - 5:30pm ET
