The Jimmy Pratt Foundation

The Jimmy Pratt Foundation Improving outcomes for NL’s vulnerable youth & their families by facilitating conversations, supporting local research initiatives & informing policy.

The Jimmy Pratt Foundation focuses on strategic research rather than chequebook philanthropy so that programs are built on partnerships rather than solely on funding. We seek opportunities that demonstrate proactive and creative responses to the status quo for youth at risk, where intervention is anchored in research, and where support programs empower people. We seek partnerships that are evidenc

e-based, that benefit children in Newfoundland and Labrador and that have the support of other entities, be they academic, social or public organizations and institutions. The Foundation will also consider direct funding to help establish projects/initiatives in the areas of childhood health, resilience education and practice, and collaborative projects that prioritize children and their needs. Projects that traverse multiple disciplines, evidence collaboration and co-operation, and address diversity will be preferred. While the Foundation has been established through private funds, any future donors or contributors to the Fund can be advised that 95% of the Foundation's resources will go directly to projects and programs.

We can't have a 'rights-led' approach to inclusion without human rights literacy. It's a huge topic that we can't fully cover in one session - but we can plant some seeds.

Through a moderated discussion, lawyer Kyle Rees and Hillary Hennessay of the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission will discuss how a deeper understanding of human rights impacts access to meaningful inclusion.

Join us in St. John’s from July 22-24, 2026, for The Jimmy Pratt Foundation Inclusion Summer Symposium entitled “Placing Children at the Centre in the Early Years: Inclusion, Belonging, Play, and Wellbeing: A gathering for sharing, sense-making, practice, and systems change grounded in children’s rights.”

The symposium will focus on universal and equitable inclusion in the early years, examining human rights, policies, and practices that ensure the safety and sense of belonging for all children.
We will host moderated discussion panels, presentations, play-focused workshops, and opportunities to learn from each other – while keeping the needs of children always at the centre. This symposium offers a range of choices, including our Play or Inclusion streams of learning.

We have gathered researchers, advocates, child-focused interventionists, land-based play leaders, disability rights change-makers, ableism disruptors, exclusion challengers, and lived-experience storytellers.
