Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, SAEN recognizes and celebrates the rich history, diverse cultures, and profound resilience of Canada's First Nations peoples.🌿💧

For countless generations, Indigenous communities have been the original stewards of the lands and waters we cherish. At SAEN, we are incredibly proud to stand alongside our Indigenous partners - including the Miawpukek and Qalipu First Nations - in the ongoing, vital work to protect wild Atlantic salmon and their habitats across Newfoundland and Labrador.

True conservation is deeply tied to reconciliation, honoring traditional environmental knowledge, and fighting for a sustainable future together. Today, we invite our angling and conservation community to listen, learn, and celebrate the vibrant heritage of Canada's original inhabitants.

Check out the latest column from noted outdoorsman and SAEN Board member Gord Follett.

Driven in part by warming waters due to climate change, striped bass have appeared in the waters of Labrador. Gord discusses the issue in his latest for CBC NL.

Striped bass have decimated salmon smolt stocks in places like the world-renowned Miramichi River in New Brunswick, which is a primary reason that residents, salmon and trout anglers along the Straits and southern Labrador are deeply concerned about this new “invasive” species to their waters.

SAEN shares the concerns expressed here by ERMA's Executive Director Terry Paul. Both our organizations, along with many others, continue to advocate for the protection of wild Atlantic salmon and their habitat, and mitigation of the ongoing effects of climate change that alters habitat and changes migration patterns.

Anglers are returning to the province’s rivers this month as Atlantic salmon make their annual migration back to local waterways. However, at least one conservation group says more needs to be done to address the effects of climate change, pointing to declining salmon returns in recent years. NTV....
