Why are Canadians making the shift to thrift? The national ReStore survey highlights that second-hand shopping is solving some of our biggest modern challenges.

Stretching the household budget amid cost-of-living pressures is a massive motivator, closely followed by a deep desire to cut down on waste and the pure thrill of the treasure hunt. But it’s not just about the items themselves, it's about where the money goes. πŸ’³

A clear majority of Canadians explicitly prefer to thrift at stores run by charitable organizations. Shoppers want their hard-earned dollars to do double duty by supporting local community causes making real impacts in their communities. πŸ‘

Could affordable homeownership be within reach for your family? 🏑

Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North is looking to connect with local working families who may be interested in future homeownership opportunities. Through our affordable homeownership program, families purchase their homes with mortgage payments geared to their income.

As Habitat homes become available through our buy-back program and new housing projects move forward in Comox and Campbell River, having a pool of eligible applicants allows opportunities to move forward more quickly.

If you have children, stable employment, and are looking for a pathway to homeownership, now is a great time to learn more and see if you qualify.

Leaving a gift in your will is one of the most significant ways to support affordable housing on North Vancouver Island, without affecting your current finances. Here is how legacy giving works to build a stronger community:

βœ”οΈ Full Control: You retain complete use of your assets during your lifetime and can alter your will at any time.

βœ”οΈ Tax Efficiencies: A charitable bequest can significantly reduce the tax burden on your estate, maximizing what you leave to loved ones and charity.

βœ”οΈ Strategic Flexibility: You can leave a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the residual balance after family is taken care of.

βœ”οΈ Future Security: These gifts give Habitat VIN the long-term stability needed to purchase land and invest in multi-family housing projects.

🌱 Your vision can build the foundations for future homeowners. Visit https://vin.habitat.ca/en/ways-to-give/legacy for more information.

How Canadians are Changing the Way They Shop β™»οΈπŸ›’

6 in 10 Canadians plan to thrift or buy pre-owned items in the next year, signalling continued growth in second-hand shopping. A new national survey by Habitat for Humanity reveals that thrifting is more popular than ever across Canada. Driven by cost-of-living pressures and a passion for sustainability, Canadians are expanding their thrift habits beyond clothes and books to include home decor, furniture, and even renovation supplies. πŸ”¨

As a national social enterprise with over 100 locations, Habitat ReStore is proud to meet this demand, with 100% of our profits directly funding local affordable housing.
