As the days grow shorter and the growing season winds down, our Urban Agriculture program is preparing for winter, caring for the soil, and getting the beds ready for a couple of months of rest.

At the Share the Harvest Community Garden, our final work parties of the season wrapped up at the end of October. Over at the Tsolum Educational Garden, work parties will continue throughout November as we prepare the gardens for a two-month winter break.

We’re so grateful to everyone who has joined us in the gardens this season. These spaces grow through the collective work of many hands, and we couldn’t do it without our wonderful volunteers. Thank you for helping our gardens grow!

"LUSH volunteers crawl through dirt, haul wheelbarrows through rain and heat, plant seeds, tend crops, and w**d beds—all to grow food for someone they may never meet. Their generosity of spirit is the ripple that altered my worldview and turned my role from job into something more deeply tied to my identity and sense of self.

Today the Tsolum Garden is a thriving micro-farm. There are fruit and nut trees and a hoop house; the fence line has been expanded; additional water lines have been installed. We collect rainwater, cultivate edible and medicinal plants, and grow massive garlic.

Our volunteer base is thriving, too. We collaborate with the Youth Climate Corps and other partner organizations. We have a dedicated group of Elders who show up every Monday. On some Saturdays during the Farmers’ Market, people may visit the garden. The space is alive and vibrant—and mostly blackberry-free.

LUSH’s mission of building a just, resilient food system has rippled through my life into an understanding that change takes place when people show up, day in and day out, to work towards a common goal, even (and especially) when it’s hard. Change comes from sharing time, knowledge, experience, and empathy. Humans need to be fed and they need to connect. LUSH does both."

Kitchen herbs can be so much more than a way to add flavour! Join Philippa Joly for a cozy evening of kitchen herbalism and learn how common herbs and spices can be used with intention, both in the kitchen and as part of your seasonal wellness practices.

You’ll explore the medicinal properties of familiar kitchen herbs and spices, then get hands-on making a warming seasonal fire c***r to enjoy during the colder months. It’s a chance to slow down, learn something new, and bring a little herbalism into your everyday cooking.
