It's tomato time, many gardeners' favourite time of year! Did you know early cold damage to a young tomato can impact its growth throughout life?

So though tomatoes have been available at nurseries for some weeks now, we like to wait at least until late October to plant ours when the soil has warmed up and frost threat is behind us.

All you need to plant your seedlings is a garden bed prepared with compost or manure, your seedlings and whatever staking material you choose.

When staking, try to insert stakes at time of planting to avoid disrupting roots in the future, and use soft cotton ties or ripped up old t-shirts to protect your tomatoes from cuts.

Well-maintained outdoor spaces make a difference to the people who use them every day.

At North Richmond Community Health, our horticulture and maintenance team has begun providing grounds maintenance services, clearing weeds, adding new plants, tending existing natives and spreading mulch.

Trained team members also carried out sharps removal, helping make the grounds safer for staff, visitors and the local community.

We’ll now be providing ongoing maintenance to build on this work and keep the grounds tidy, welcoming and well maintained.

Are you a landscaper or skilled handy person who enjoys varied, practical work?

We're looking for reliable contractors to help build, repair and improve the community gardens we support.

We’re keen to hear from all-rounders with experience in building structures, retaining walls, paving and bricklaying. There’s also work involving garden resurfacing, painting and minor irrigation repairs.

Did you catch one of our cooking demonstrations at the Be Bold Festival last Saturday?

Despite the grey skies, the local community came out and joined us as we cooked up damper, Egyptian koshary and kisir. We loved sharing recipes and connecting over delicious food with everyone who stopped by.

Thank you to for having us and to everyone who helped make a gloomy day feel a little brighter!

A little look at the Spring Garden Party at Salisbury Garden in Brighton last Thursday.

Residents hosted their own stalls, decorated plant pots, tried flower printing and shared a barbecue, with plenty of time to catch up with neighbours and enjoy the garden.

Together with Community Housing Limited and local residents, we’re supporting a green space where community members can grow food, share their skills and feel part of their community. It was lovely to see everyone making it their own.

Spring is officially here! That means plenty to do in the garden.

Today, we’re looking back at the Brighton Community Garden last season and some of the colour, activity and harvest we enjoyed with the community.

It’s this mix of planting, learning and sharing that our team supports throughout the year, working alongside gardeners to care for their shared spaces and grow food together.

We’re looking forward to another busy spring in the gardens.

Last week, we shared a productive morning at the Happy Harvest Communal Garden with volunteers from .gardeningforgood.

Working alongside resident gardeners and the Cultivating Community team, the volunteers helped with weeding, composting, pruning and other seasonal maintenance across the garden, getting the space ready for the warmer months ahead.

A big thank you to Plantfulness for donating new tools and supplies to the garden, which will support resident gardeners to continue caring for the space. A further thank you to the volunteers for bringing such great energy to the day, to Women’s Housing Limited for supporting the session and to the resident gardeners for welcoming everyone into their garden.

The rooftop farm is cared for by our team and supports food growing, learning and community connection.

Each year, more than 776 kilograms of fresh, organic produce leaves the farm as food relief, reaching social housing residents and families in need across Melbourne's north-east.
