Lighthouse Foundation Let's end youth homelessness, together. At Lighthouse, we're creating pathways to end youth homelessness, together.

We provide young people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, with the care and support they need to heal, thrive and achieve a lifelong sense of belonging. Through community collaboration and our evidence-based Lighthouse Model of Care, we create therapeutic homes and deliver tailored support programs to transform the lives of young people. Our Lighthouse Homes, Foster and Family Care and In Community care environments ensure our support reaches the children and youth who need it, where they need it, for as long as they need it.

This Saturday, 10 October, is World Homeless Day, a reminder that far too many children and young people in Australia are experiencing homelessness.

Almost 1 in 4 people experiencing homelessness in Australia are aged 12–24, including more than 7,600 young people in Victoria alone.

At Lighthouse Foundation, we believe every young person deserves a stable home, a sense of belonging and people to walk beside them.

Kinship Care Week 2026 💛
This year’s theme - Supported carers. Supported kids - recognises something simple but important: when we support the person caring for a child, we’re also supporting the child.
When a child cannot live with their parents, kinship care can help them stay connected to their family, culture and community, while giving them the stability and support they need.
In Victoria, around 77% of children in out-of-home care are in kinship care, with relatives or trusted people from their existing network stepping up to care for them.
For Trish, becoming a kinship carer has meant opening her home to children in her family and helping them feel safe, connected and like they belong.
“They need to feel as though they belong, and we all need to feel that we belong together.”

As Foster Care Week comes to a close, we’re sharing a little more about what a foster care journey can look like.

Some carers begin by providing respite care, offering a child a safe and welcoming place for a few days at a time. For some, that experience can grow into a longer term commitment when the right opportunity and circumstances come together.

Long term foster care provides children with the stability, consistency and nurturing relationships that can help them feel safe, build trust and develop a sense of belonging over time.

It means being there for the everyday moments as well as the milestones, creating familiar routines and giving a child the security of knowing there is a safe place to call home.

We’ve shared more about what long term foster care can look like, who can become a foster carer and the support Lighthouse provides along the way.

This Foster Care Week, we gathered with our incredible foster carers for a special dinner at our Northern Hub Home. It was a lovely evening to come together, share a meal and enjoy time with the people who open their hearts and homes to children and young people in our care.
It was also a chance to say a heartfelt thank you to our carers for the care, consistency and connection they bring every day, and for being there for the journey.
We’re so grateful for everything our foster carers do to help children and young people feel safe, supported and at home.
A special thank you to Vitality Brands for generously donating gifts for our carers and helping make the evening even more special. 🧡

Meet Foster Carers Ana and Aaron 🧡

As we continue Foster Care Week and celebrate the people who open their doors and hearts to children in need, we’re sharing the story of two of Lighthouse’s incredible long term foster carers.

For Ana and Aaron, becoming foster carers started with a spare bedroom, a desire to help and the feeling that they had room in their lives to welcome a child.

“We knew there were a lot of kids who weren't living in homes and needed somewhere safe.”

Opening their home has meant making space in their everyday lives, being there for the routines and small moments.

“It’s rewarding seeing them grow.”

They share that long term care is about being there for the journey, providing the consistency, connection and stability that can help a child feel safe and supported over time. It’s about showing what can become possible when a child has the security of a safe home, caring relationships and people who are there to support them along the way.

Our Manager of Youth & Family Services, Ben, recently joined Melbourne Women's Foundation for their Journey to Impact panel, speaking about Lighthouse’s Young Women’s Freedom Program and the young women we support.

The Young Women’s Freedom Program provides safe, therapeutic homes and support for young women escaping, or at risk of, modern slavery practices including early and forced marriage. It is a place where young women can feel safe, build trust and begin to rebuild their lives.

The Journey to Impact conversation explored what it really takes to create lasting change, and the important role that time, trust and long-term partnerships can play in supporting young women to move forward.

Melbourne Women’s Foundation was one of the early funders of the Young Women’s Freedom Program, and we’re incredibly grateful for the role their early support has played in its journey and impact.

This Foster Care Week, we’re celebrating and thanking the incredible foster carers who open their homes, hearts and lives to children and young people in Lighthouse care.

The 2026 Foster Care Week theme, Open Doors. Open Hearts. Open Opportunities, recognises the care, stability and connection foster carers provide every day.

As part of the Lighthouse community, our foster carers are at the heart of creating safe, nurturing homes where children can feel a sense of belonging, build trusting relationships and have the opportunity to heal and grow.

To every Lighthouse foster carer, thank you for the commitment, patience and care you bring to this important role.
