The Royal Flying Doctor Service SA/NT (RFDS) has welcomed the recent announcement that it will operate the Top End Medical Retrieval Service (TEMRS), following a competitive procurement process led by the Northern Territory Government.

NT Minister for Health Steve Edgington said aeromedical retrieval services were essential to providing urgent and specialist care in the Northern Territory and they looked forward to working with RFDS SA/NT to transition to the new arrangements.

“RFDS has a long history of delivering health care in remote and regional Australia, and we look forward to working with the organisation to provide this critical service across the Top End, Big Rivers and East Arnhem regions,” he said.

Queensland: A new milestone for our Aeromedical Training Academy.

This month, the Academy welcomed two new pilots from Queensland Government Air to undertake their B360 Type Rating training in our King Air full-flight simulator, with our own certified flight instructors delivering the training for the first time to an external client.

It’s an exciting milestone for the Academy and a great recognition of the expertise within our team.

The RFDS values our ongoing relationship with QGAir and are proud to play a role in developing and strengthening Australia’s pilot workforce.

"Thank you for saving my life" ...

When Rhonda returned to visit our Broken Hill base, gratitude and joy filled her heart. She is alive today because you proudly support and care for people just like her.

Back in April 2022, Rhonda arrived at Broken Hill Hospital fighting for her life, suffering multi-organ failure and in cardiac arrest. Nursing staff were trying to resuscitate Rhonda when they called the Flying Doctor.

Because of the critical care Rhonda received then, which saved her life, she was recently able to do something quite unique. She visited our base and went into an aircraft, just like the one in which she was taken to Adelaide, and met the pilot who flew her safely back home to her family.

RFDS helping inspire the next generation of rural healthcare professionals ⛑️

With ongoing demand for healthcare professionals across rural and remote Australia, RFDS South Eastern Section is helping build the future workforce by inspiring young people to explore rewarding careers in health.

“The future of rural healthcare depends on attracting passionate, skilled people into the sector. Events like the Rural Health Pathways Showcase allow us to connect with students early, broaden their understanding of healthcare careers and inspire them to consider the impact they could have in rural and remote communities."

When the Flying Doctor’s Primary Health Care (PHC) teams visit communities like Greenvale or Gregory Downs, they don’t arrive empty-handed. They fly in with roughly 100 kilograms of medical equipment, transforming community halls and local spaces into fully functioning clinics for the day.

"For many families living remotely, accessing regular healthcare isn’t always simple," says Rochelle Stokes, Primary Health Care Manager.

"Distance and travel can make it harder to get the support they need, particularly young families, station owners and our First Nations communities."
