Who knew women health and Halloween could work together?

CEH held its second Women Health Expo at the Broadmeadows Community Hub on Thursday surrounded by Halloween decorations, with close to 100 women of culturally diverse backgrounds attending information sessions on breast and cervical screening. An opportunity to ask questions and book screening appointments in a safe and culturally supportive environment.

Thanks to our former colleague Rana Joseph (in the photo) for supporting the event, and to participating organisations:

18 October is World Menopause Day, a chance to start conversations about menopause and perimenopause and make sure every woman can access information about her health.

Menopause affects women differently, and language shouldn't be a barrier to understanding what's happening and what support is available. The Health Translations library has over 30 translated resources on menopause and perimenopause, covering common symptoms and treatment options, to help multicultural women, health workers and community organisations find trusted information in their own language.

New translated aged care resources!

Health Translations has added new translated resources from My Aged Care and the Aged Care Quality & Safety Commission (ACQSC) to help older Australians, their families, carers and service providers access important aged care information.

The new My Aged Care resources cover Support at Home services, restorative care, short-term and end-of-life pathways, finding and entering an aged care home, and more.

Explore all My Aged Care resources: https://tinyurl.com/HTmac2026

Resources from the ACQSC provide accessible information about rights, quality and safety in aged care, including food and dining preferences, raising concerns, and what to expect when making a complaint or raising a concern.

A phrase that seems simple can mean completely different things to different people. We asked our colleagues what a specific term meant to them. Watch the video to find out what we asked, and see how much understanding can vary.

October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month.

Each year, more than 3,000 Australians are diagnosed with primary liver cancer. Most people who develop it already have a liver condition, like hepatitis B. Finding and treating these conditions early can save lives.

Find free, translated resources on hepatitis B and liver health in the Health Translations library: https://lnkd.in/gQ2GA2Z9

Health and community workers: join our free Hepatitis B Made Easy webinar on Thursday 22 October, 10–11:30am. It is worth 1.5 CPD points. Register: https://lnkd.in/guS67Pej

Our Multicultural Health and Support Service (MHSS) also runs free viral hepatitis education sessions for community members. Contact us to book a session: ceh.org.au/contact

No matter what sector you work in, clear communication benefits the people you support and helps your day-to-day work run smoothly.

When we communicate in jargon, we create unnecessary barriers. Using plain language takes the mental load off the person listening or reading, helps avoid misunderstandings, and gets straight to the point.

Plain language isn't just about editing written documents. It's about how we talk, present, and connect every day.

3 ways to build better communication habits:
✅ Listen out for complex terms in your meetings and everyday conversations.
✅Swap tricky phrases for straightforward alternatives, both spoken and written.
✅Run a lunchtime quiz for your team and work on your plain language skills together.

Every October, we highlight how workplace jargon makes it harder for people to access our services. "Drop the Jargon" is about identifying complex language and making our communication clearer for everyone, no matter what field you work in.

In fact, even "jargon" is a complicated word. Everyday terms like "technical language" or "complicated words" are much easier to understand.

Run a lunchtime quiz in your workplace to test your team's plain language skills, or join this year’s webinar to explore what it means to communicate in plain language. We will give you practical actions and tools that you can apply immediately to your work.

We are excited to host a special webinar next week with Renea Camilleri from Jean Hailes for Women's Health , exploring menopause in multicultural communities and why culturally responsive health information and support matter.

Renea brings extensive experience in women’s health, public health and community engagement. She is a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife (Non-Practising), with postgraduate qualifications in Midwifery and Women’s Health Medicine. Alongside her role as Community Engagement & Partnerships Manager at Jean Hailes for Women's Health, she also teaches seasonally in Deakin University’s Bachelor of Nursing program.

Join us to learn, share and challenge some of the myths and taboos surrounding menopause — and explore how we can create more culturally responsive conversations and support.
