We had a very lively meeting last week along the theme of Crime. We started with an inspiration from Momir and moved to speeches from Dave and Charles. Sara was Table Topics master and she had some great questions based on the theme. Last month's guest Sean returned to get a better feel for what we do.

Next week's topic is Shark. Now's the time to come along and see what Toastmasters is all about. We are a welcoming bunch. We are meeting 7pm on Tuesday 20 October at St Hilda's Community Hall, 15 View St, North Perth 😄

Ever wondered what happens at a typical Toastmasters meeting? We'll give you the lowdown below.

We had an interesting meeting at our last meeting on 15 September. Our meeting theme was "International Day of Democracy." We welcomed our guests Mike and Sean.

Zach was the Sergeant at Arms and started the meeting. After making the necessary announcements, Zach introduced Dave as our meeting Toastmaster. Dave covered the agenda changes and then invited Zach (doubling as Timer) to explain the timing arrangements. Zach showed us how the timing would be done by demonstrating the timing lights, including Oinky (our porcine friend), who would oink if anyone went a little too over their allotted time.

Sara was our first speaker. Sara gave us a speech about her recent trip to France. She explained the different methods of transport she used, including the train system and driving on the other side of the road, and how she used AI to sort out her parking and timetable each day. She had a diagram showing us how she returned to Paris after each separate adventure. Duc was the evaluator for Sara's speech.

Duc was our second speaker. Her speech title was "Q***r Ecology," and she spoke about the natural world and examples of animal species which have more than two s*xes or can change s*x, with a special focus on eels. Ella was the evaluator for Duc's speech.

Tara was our third speaker. Tara spoke about her exercise and healthy living program which has been triggered by getting older and leaving her partying younger days behind. Ayo was the evaluator for Tara's speech

Dave stepped up to be the Table Topics Master, as Tristan was an apology, and had topics based on the theme of democracy.

Sara stepped up to evaluate the Table Topics, since Momir was an apology.

Zach gave a thorough Timekeeper's report and noted the undertime and overtime speakers and made sure that Oinky was on the ball in telling us to wind up our speeches.

Charles was the General Evaluator, and gave feedback for those roles which had not been evaluated.

Come and join us at our next Toastmasters meeting on Tuesday, 6 October from 7pm at St Hilda's Anglican Church Community Hall, 15 View St North Perth.

Tristan gave us his first ever speech. He spoke about his early memories of getting stage fright at a school play, and learning about podcasts during Covid. Ella was his evaluator.

Jim was our second speaker. His speech title was "An Unsung Hero". Jim continued the story of Tom Crean from a previous speech. Tom Crean was a member of Robert Scott's Antarctic expedition in 1911 and was in the Royal Navy. Jim told the story of Tom Crean's early life, how he joined the Navy and how he ended up joining the polar expedition. Dave was the evaluator for Jim's speech.

Josh was our third speaker with his first ever speech. Josh told his story about how he studied philosophy at uni and joined the public service. Josh put into practise his learning from uni in a public policy department where he does policy research and implementation. Emily was the evaluator for Jim's speech.

Charles was the Table Topics Master and had a "Horses' Birthday" theme. Sara evaluated the Table Topics. Table Topics is an opportunity for members and guests to get up and give a short impromptu speech after being given a surprise question. It's great for interview preparation.
