As part of SPACED’s Know Thy Neighbour #4, Blue Joy Theatre Company is working with the City of Belmont for their site-responsive residency. The City of Belmont is nestled between the CBD and the Perth Hills, with the Swan River and Perth Airport in its borders. Where cultures blend and creativity thrives, the Blue Joy team engages in research focused on liminal everyday sites within the Belmont community.

Join Cassandra’s participatory performance games for her Know Thy Neighbour #4 residency, coming up on June 13th! ‘Soft Assembly: Public Training Session #1’ is an experimental public game session exploring cooperation, maintenance, rest, and minor public absurdities through a series of short rotating activities.

Circular Economies artist Zali Morgan returns to Carnamah for the final leg of her residency, reflecting on stolen land and its memories.

“Now a barren landscape, used many times over and over again to fulfil the Crown’s needs.
Left to dry out, depleted and exhausted, this Boodja continues to serve as a vessel.
A vessel to carry resources for crops, farms, mines.
But also a vessel to carry story, truth, and culture.”

We are excited to present six FREE weekly online workshops as part of the OPEN SPACE professional development program. Although these workshops have been designed for emerging producers attached to the Circular Economies program, we invite independent creatives, and arts workers from other organisations including local government to attend.

✧✧ Artist Spotlight: Blue Joy Theatre Company 🌀

The Blue Joy crew is kicking off strong in their first week of Know Thy Neighbour #4 residency! Made up of Mohammed ‘Ayo Busari’, Shelby McKenzie and Ken Meyer, Blue Joy Theatre Company aims to amplify underrepresented voices, foster cultural exchange and challenge norms on stages.

They have partnered up with City of Belmont on their project that is rooted in community storytelling. Across their site-responsive residency, they will engage in research focused on liminal everyday sites, footpaths, bus stops, laundromats, and street corners, where people pause, pass, and persist.

Attend Blue Joy’s storytelling workshop THIS SUNDAY, where participants will explore on everyday interactions with familiar public spaces through guided creative prompts and writing activities; for a space to pause, observe and write.

✧✧ Sarsby Martin’s Reflection as an OPEN SPACE Emerging Producer

Sarsby shares their most memorable takeaway from participating in the OPEN SPACE emerging producer mentorship, working with Circular Economies artist Loren Kronemyer in Kepa Kurl/Esperance:

“It was most rewarding to witness the quality of conversation between [a local collector] and Loren, observing the respect she brought to his knowledge, and the fluency with which she articulated her ideas and project. I miss being around that kind of seriousness towards art, where things were beyond hobbies. Artwork and craftsmanship are treated seriously because they are serious.”
