As they wrap up their residency, Circular Economies artists Sue & Tarsh reimagines the scent of the WA Wheatbelt town of Beverley, 64 years from now.

“Water, when present, smells different. Wetlands and the deep pools of Gogulgar Bilya are rare and fragmented refuges. Around them, life concentrates, and so do smells - dense, biological, overripe. Where biodiversity persists, it does so in pockets.”

Circular Economies artist Zali Morgan visits Mullewa during her residency and gravitates toward a book by Aunty Charmaine ‘Nganajungu Yagu’. This specific poem reminds Zali of why and who we are doing this for.

✧✧ Beverley in 2050... ⊹ ࣪ ˖⏱ ୭˚. ᵎ

In the final moments of their Circular Economies residency, Sue & Tarsh asks what Beverley will smell like in 2050, drawing on scents and stories they’ve collected to imagine a possible future.

“Deep and freshly fragrant pools are replacing formerly stagnant and stinky algal blooms. These pools are nurtured by the locals as infant oases in the face of the oncoming drought and heat. Insects, fish, crustaceans and rakali are starting to re-emerge. New assemblages begin to form. Old scents reappear.”

✧✧ Artist Spotlight: Cara Teusner-Gartland 𖤓˚࿔

Cara’s project for her Know Thy Neighbour #4 residency explores the Fremantle Buffalo Club and its power of empathy, wellbeing and connection. Working in partnership with the Club and Vessel, Cara draws on the Club’s history and interview present members to reflect the club’s identity and living history within the broader community of Fremantle.

Cara’s multidisciplinary practice is rooted in community, place and storytelling. Her process for developing work often involves long dérives, collecting found and recycled materials, interviews, and archival research.

✧✧ Project Partner Spotlight: Town of Victoria Park ༄˖°.🍃

Busy things are underway at the Town of Victoria Park with Cassandra Tytler for her Know Thy Neighbour #4 residency! Located 10 minutes from the Perth CBD, the Town of Victoria Park is centred around Albany Highway – one of the longest main strips in the Southern Hemisphere and is a cultural hub nestled on the southern banks of Derbarl Yerrigan (the Swan River). Cassandra’s project engages with the community through a series of participatory performance games across the wider Town of Victoria Park.

Cassandra’s project for Know Thy Neighbour #4 is a series of participatory performance games developed through community input. Working with Town of Victoria Park, she asks participants to work through complex social and environmental tensions in an open, playful way.

Cassandra’s practice spans over experimental moving image, performance and site-based socially engaged artworks. Known for her wry humour and incisive critique, she combines storytelling and technical experimentation to investigate the intersections of politics, place and power.

As part of SPACED’s Know Thy Neighbour #4, Blue Joy Theatre Company is working with the City of Belmont for their site-responsive residency. The City of Belmont is nestled between the CBD and the Perth Hills, with the Swan River and Perth Airport in its borders. Where cultures blend and creativity thrives, the Blue Joy team engages in research focused on liminal everyday sites within the Belmont community.

Circular Economies artist Zali Morgan returns to Carnamah for the final leg of her residency, reflecting on stolen land and its memories.

“Now a barren landscape, used many times over and over again to fulfil the Crown’s needs.
Left to dry out, depleted and exhausted, this Boodja continues to serve as a vessel.
A vessel to carry resources for crops, farms, mines.
But also a vessel to carry story, truth, and culture.”
