Uniting Seniors in the City

Companionship through learning for older adults (60+) of Perth.

Uniting Seniors in the City (formerly Trinity School for Seniors) is an outreach mission of the Uniting Church in the City (UCIC), committed to helping older adults (60 years and older) to participate in lifelong learning and to have friendship and companionship on this journey. USIC endeavours to achieve a balance between educational programs, social activities, peer learning opportunities and a

holistic attitude towards wellness. Our classes are small, fostering a strong sense of friendship and comradery, and we encourage students to maintain their physical activity and also to take time to catch up with friends. There are no exams and no certificates of achievement, but there is a great deal of fun, laughter and support for one another. For members of Uniting Seniors in the City we offer:
- Around 80 courses each term
- $105 membership fee per term which allows for enrolment in three courses,
plus $20 surcharge per additional class
- Four terms per year, duration of each term is either seven or eight weeks
- Additional three week programs held in Summer (January) and Winter (July)
- Orientation tours for new students
- Annual school events showcasing our talented students

Throughout our August Season of Mission, we are exploring organisations that reflect God's love in practical and transformative ways. This week we turn our attention to Uniting WA, an agency of the Uniting Church that serves thousands of Western Australians through a wide range of community services. Uniting WA's vision is simple yet profound: to inspire people, enliven communities, and confront injustice.

Uniting WA works alongside people experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, financial hardship, disability, family difficulties, and social isolation. Through housing support, community services, advocacy, and practical care, they help people find stability, dignity, and hope.

At the heart of their ministry is a conviction that every person matters. In a society where people can often feel invisible or forgotten, Uniting WA seeks to ensure that individuals are treated with respect, compassion, and dignity. Their work reminds us that mission is not only about what we say, but also about how we accompany people through life's challenges.

The prophet Micah reminds us of God's call:
"What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"�(Micah 6:8)

The phrase "walk humbly" is particularly significant. Mission is not about rescuing others from a distance; it is about walking alongside them. This is the approach embodied by Uniting WA. Whether supporting someone experiencing homelessness, providing mental health services, or helping families navigate difficult circumstances, their ministry is grounded in relationship, compassion, and hope.

Mission begins when we recognise Christ in the people we meet and respond with love. Through the ministry of Uniting WA, we see a living expression of the Gospel—good news shared not only through words, but through practical acts of care, justice, and compassion.

𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲

As part of our August Season of Mission, we will be learning about the work of 12 Buckets, a remarkable Western Australian organisation dedicated to supporting children and young people experiencing disadvantage and hardship. Through mentoring, relationship-building, and community partnerships, 12 Buckets seeks to ensure that young people are seen, heard, valued, and supported as they grow.

At the heart of the 12 Buckets story is a simple but powerful belief: every young person deserves the opportunity to flourish, regardless of their background or circumstances. Through volunteer mentors, school-based programs, and community initiatives, 12 Buckets helps children develop confidence, resilience, belonging, and hope for the future.

As Christians, this vision resonates deeply with the ministry of Jesus. Again and again, the Gospels show Jesus making time for those whom others overlooked. He welcomed children, listened to those on the margins, and recognised the worth and dignity of every person.

When the disciples tried to keep children away, Jesus responded:
"Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs." (Mark 10:14)

The work of 12 Buckets reminds us that mission often begins with presence. Before problems can be solved, relationships must be built. Before confidence can grow, a young person needs to know they matter. A listening ear, a trusted mentor, and a safe community can make an extraordinary difference in a child's life.

One of the values underpinning the ministry of 12 Buckets is belonging. In a world where many young people experience isolation, instability, or uncertainty, belonging is a precious gift. It is also central to the Gospel. God calls us into community, where we are known, loved, and encouraged to discover and use the gifts we have been given.

Mission is not only about changing lives; it is about building relationships that enable people to discover their God-given potential. The ministry of 12 Buckets is a powerful reminder that when a child is supported, encouraged, and believed in, hope takes root and futures can be transformed.

𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞

Throughout August, we enter our annual Season of Mission, a time when we reflect on the ways God is at work in the world and consider how we are called to participate in that mission.

Mission is often understood as something that happens "out there" — across oceans, in distant communities, or through specialised ministries. Yet mission is also found much closer to home. It is present wherever people are valued, dignity is restored, and opportunities are created for individuals to flourish as the people God created them to be.

This month we are delighted to welcome our first guest presenter from Good Sammy Enterprises, a Western Australian organisation that has been creating employment, training, and community opportunities for people with disability since 1958. Good Sammy's work is founded on the belief that every person has gifts, abilities, and potential that deserve to be recognised and nurtured. Through employment, training, mentoring, and social enterprise initiatives, Good Sammy helps people build confidence, independence, skills, and meaningful connections.

Their ministry of inclusion reflects something central to the Gospel. Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently saw what others overlooked. He welcomed those who were excluded, honoured those whose gifts were ignored, and restored people to community. The Kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed is one in which every person is valued and every individual has a place.

As Paul writes:
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them."�(1 Corinthians 12:4)

The Church has long affirmed that every person bears the image of God and possesses gifts that can contribute to the life of the community. Organisations such as Good Sammy put that conviction into practice through opportunities that empower people with disability to participate fully in workplaces, communities, and society. Good Sammy currently supports hundreds of Western Australians through employment and training pathways and continues to expand opportunities across the state.

We look forward to hearing the stories and insights our Good Sammy presenter will share. May their witness encourage us to see mission not simply as charity, but as partnership, empowerment, and the creation of communities where everyone can belong, contribute, and thrive.

In doing so, we catch a glimpse of God's vision for the world — a community where each person is valued, each gift is celebrated, and each life is treated as a precious reflection of God's love.

𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the opening of the Reverend John Flynn Memorial Church in Alice Springs, dedicated on 5 May 1956 as a memorial to one of Australia's most visionary Christian leaders. The church was built to honour the Reverend John Flynn, founder of the Australian Inland Mission and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and to continue his dream of an “Inland Cathedral” at the heart of Australia.

Many Australians know Flynn because of the Flying Doctor Service. Fewer know that his remarkable achievements grew from a deep Christian faith and a conviction that God cared for people living in the most isolated parts of the country.

When Flynn looked across inland Australia, he saw more than distance and hardship. He saw communities often cut off from medical care, pastoral support, education, and companionship. Rather than accepting this reality, he asked how the Church might respond. His answer was practical Christianity in action. Through the Australian Inland Mission — today known as Frontier Services — he sought to bring hope, care, and connection to people living beyond the reach of ordinary services.

The phrase most closely associated with Flynn is that he helped spread a "mantle of safety" over inland Australia. Yet that mantle was never merely about aircraft, radios, hospitals, or technology. It was about people. It was about ensuring that no one felt forgotten. It was about expressing God's love in practical and life-giving ways.

Jesus said: "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in."�(Matthew 25:35)

Flynn understood that faith must be lived as well as proclaimed. His legacy reminds us that Christian mission is not confined to church buildings; it is found wherever God's people respond to human need with compassion, imagination, and courage.

As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the John Flynn Memorial Church, we also give thanks for the ongoing ministry of Frontier Services, which continues to support people in remote and regional Australia. The challenges may have changed since Flynn's day, but the call remains the same: to accompany those who may feel isolated and to remind them that they are valued, seen, and loved by God.

Perhaps the anniversary invites us to ask ourselves: Who are the isolated people in our own communities? Who feels forgotten, overlooked, or alone? How might we help extend a "mantle of safety" through a phone call, a visit, a prayer, an act of generosity, or a simple word of encouragement?

Seventy years after the opening of the memorial church, Flynn's vision continues to challenge and inspire us. The best way to honour his legacy is not simply to remember it, but to continue it.

Each year on 18 July, the world observes United Nations Nelson Mandela International Day, a day that celebrates a life devoted to justice, reconciliation, and service. The United Nations encourages people everywhere to make a difference in their communities, reminding us that every person has both the ability and responsibility to help change the world for the better. The day is also associated with the invitation to give 67 minutes of service, reflecting Mandela’s many years of public service.

As Christians, we hear echoes of the Gospel in this challenge. Jesus taught that the greatest among us are those who serve. He consistently directed His followers to care for the vulnerable, seek justice, and love their neighbours.

The prophet Micah writes: “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

Mandela Day invites us to consider how we live out these words. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the needs around us and to assume that meaningful change is the responsibility of governments, organisations, or other people. Yet both Mandela’s example and the teachings of Jesus remind us that lasting change often begins with ordinary people taking small, faithful steps.

A kind word to someone who is lonely. A visit to a neighbour. A commitment to support a local ministry. An act of generosity. A willingness to listen and reconcile. These simple actions may seem insignificant, but God frequently works through small acts of faithfulness to bring about His larger purposes.

As a church community, we are called not only to gather for worship but also to be Christ’s hands and feet in the world. Our mission is to share God's love in practical ways and to build communities marked by hope, compassion, and grace.

On a personal note, in 2007, while visiting my brother and his wife in Swaziland (now Eswatini), we travelled to Cape Town and went on a boat trip to Robbin Island – one of the places where Mandela was imprisoned.

What profound moments to sit in his prison cell and to see the “work place” where he and others broke rocks in the makeshift quarry. That visit solidified my enduring memory of a man that would not be broken and never lost his humanity nor his capacity to see the humanity in others even as they violently opposed him.

For many years, whether at St Stephen’s School or Methodist Ladies’ College, I would screen the movie, Invictus. It tells the story of how Nelson Mandela used the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa to unite the country after the end of apartheid, focusing on his partnership with Springboks captain François Pienaar.

Nelson should have the last word:

It is also a time to reflect on our shared history, listen to First Nations voices, and recommit ourselves to the work of justice, reconciliation, and mutual respect.

NAIDOC Week traces its origins to the 1938 Day of Mourning, when Aboriginal leaders gathered to protest injustice and advocate for the rights and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. What began as a movement for justice has grown into a week of celebration, remembrance, education, and advocacy.

This year's theme, "50 Years of Deadly," celebrates fifty years of NAIDOC Week and honours the strength, resilience, leadership, creativity, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In Aboriginal English, deadly is a term of praise. It means excellent, impressive, inspiring, and worthy of celebration. It is a word that speaks of pride, identity, and community.

For Christians, this celebration resonates deeply with our faith. Scripture teaches us that every person is created in the image of God and that the diversity of peoples and cultures is part of God's good creation. We give thanks for the wisdom, spirituality, stories, languages, and deep connection to Country that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have nurtured across countless generations.

We give thanks for the gift of NAIDOC Week and for the rich cultures, histories, languages, and wisdom of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We thank You for the Elders who have faithfully passed on stories, traditions, and knowledge from generation to generation. We give thanks for leaders, advocates, artists, teachers, and community members whose strength and vision continue to enrich our nation.
As we celebrate 50 Years of Deadly, help us to recognise and honour all that is excellent, courageous, and life-giving among First Nations peoples. Open our hearts to listen with humility, to learn with respect, and to walk together in the spirit of reconciliation.

Forgive us for the times we have failed to hear the voices of those who have been marginalised or ignored. Inspire us to work for justice, peace, and healing in our communities.

May Your Spirit guide us to build relationships marked by compassion, understanding, and mutual respect. Help us to see Your image reflected in one another and to celebrate the diversity of Your creation.

Bless this land, its First Peoples, and all who call Australia home. May we grow together in hope, truth, and love.

On Saturday 4 July at Perth Wesley Church the Uniting Church will gather to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Uniting WA.

Many of us are familiar with the origins of Uniting WA but it is always important to review histories such as this.

Uniting WA officially began on July 1, 2006, as UnitingCare West. It was the result of the merging of several historical community service agencies and parish missions into a single, cohesive organisation. The rebranding as Uniting WA took place in 2020.

While Uniting WA in its current structure is relatively young, its community roots date back to the early days of the Swan River Colony:
- Fremantle Wesley Mission
- Perth Wesley Mission
- Mofflyn Child and Family Care Services
- Trinity Outreach Services
- Rainbow Project
- UnitingCare Kwinana

n 2022, Uniting WA created a landmark shift in the community sector by transitioning a major family services contract to Kinship Connections, an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO). This was the first time a community services contract was formally novated to an ACCO in Western Australia.

Today, Uniting WA is committed to these central principles:
- Connected and inclusive
- Transparent
- Responsive and impactful
- Informed and quality assured
- Person-centred and capabilities-focused
- Safe and accountable

With Rev Des Cousins speaking about the early days of Uniting WA as the first Chairperson and Moderator, Rev David Jackson, as the preacher of the day, it is certainly an honour that Perth Wesley Church accepted the invitation to be the venue for this celebratory service.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗼𝘄𝘀’ 𝗗𝗮𝘆

Invisible Women, Invisible Problems

For many women around the world, the devastating loss of a partner is magnified by a long-term fight for their basic rights and dignity. Despite the fact that there are more than 258 million widows around the world, widows have historically been left unseen, unsupported, and unmeasured in our societies.

Today, as armed conflicts, displacement and migration, and health crisis leave tens of thousands of women newly widowed and many others whose partners are missing or disappeared, the unique experiences and needs of widows must be brought to the forefront, with their voices leading the way.

Experience from the past, shows that widows are often denied inheritance rights, have their property grabbed after the death of a partner, and can face extreme stigma and discrimination, as perceived ‘carriers’ of disease.

Worldwide, women are much less likely to have access to old age pensions than men, so the death of a spouse can lead to destitution for older women. Even widows may not have access to bank accounts to support themselves and their children. With lone-mother families and single older women already particularly vulnerable to poverty, this is an area that needs urgent attention.

The United Nations has observed 23 June as International Widows Day since 2011 as a way of drawing attention to the voices and experiences of widows and to galvanise the unique support that they need.

Now more than ever, this day is an opportunity for action towards achieving full rights and recognition for widows including providing them with information on access to a fair share of their inheritance, land and productive resources; pensions and social protection that are not based on marital status alone; decent work and equal pay; and education and training opportunities.

Empowering widows to support themselves and their families also means addressing social stigmas that create exclusion, and discriminatory or harmful practices.

Prior to my departure for Seattle and my annual family visit, Angela and I had the great opportunity to once again attend the UWA Conservatorium of Music prize giving and scholarship awarding evening on 27 May.

Our roles as the representatives of the Uniting Church in the City is to congratulate each of our Music Scholars as they come forward onto the stage of the Calloway Auditorium and present them with their scholarship certificate.

In 2026, we welcomed our 19th cohort of talented young musicians:

- Suraya Edwards - Guitar
- Joscelyn Leahy - Guitar
- Hamish Macdonald - Marimba
- Sophie Royle - Flute
- Katrina Soares – Marimba

Each year, at the event, one of the great joys is getting to talk to our Scholars’ parents and to hear, from their perspective, how their son or daughter got to the level of expertise where she or he is now. It is always a story of pride and often stories of sacrifice and determination.

Many of you may recall that we collaborated with the Conservatorium of Music in 2022 to mark the 15th year of this partnership. Scholars from that year and previous years were in attendance along with members of UCIC.

In looking towards 2027 and the 20th UWA Wesley Music Scholar cohort, we as a church community must celebrate this commitment that began in 2007.

Of course, thanks are in large part to the leadership and stewardship of our Director of Music, Angela Currie, who is the driving force, guiding, supporting and encouraging these young people, year after year, as valued members of our community.

It is with thanks to God that this valuable ministry continues to thrive year after year after year.

𝟵𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘃 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗶𝗲𝗸

On 13 June 1927 at the Colonel Light Gardens Congregational Union Church (now Colonel Light Gardens Uniting Church), South Australia, Winifred Kiek was ordained as a minister in the Congregational Union of Australia. The first woman to be ordained by any denomination in Australia.

With the 100th anniversary in 2027, it seems more than appropriate to highlight Winifred and her accomplishments within and outside of the Congregational Church.

Following World War 1, Winifred and her husband Edward Kiek along with their three children, migrated to Adelaide. Winifred studied theology and was awarded a Bachelor of Divinity from the Melbourne College of Divinity in 1929.

After ordination, Rev Kiek continued to serve as Minister at the Colonel Light Gardens Congregational Union Church and then at the Knoxville Congregational Church for seven years.

She served in a wide variety of capacities with the South Australian Women's Christian Temperance Union, National Council of Women, Women’s Non-Party Association (renamed the League of Women Voters) and the Pan-Pacific and Southeast Asia Women's Association, where she was a delegate to women's conferences in New Zealand (1952), Sri Lanka (1955), Iran (1960) and Japan (1966).

The Winifred Kiek Scholarship for theological education of women in leadership, or charitable projects in the Asia-Pacific Region was named in her honour. The inaugural award was made in 1965 and is administered by Australian Church Women Inc.

The Congregational Union of Australia came into union with the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches to form the Uniting Church in Australia on 22 June, 1977.
