Reminder of what's coming up in Albany, WA - March 2023:

Albany Pride is excited to announce the launch of the Albany Pride Festival 2023 program – featuring an impressive and diverse lineup of events.

Albany Pride Festival will return in 2023 from Friday, 3rd – Sunday, 12th March. The theme for this year’s Pride Festival is “Let’s Get Visible”, with visibility and inclusion being a guiding focus for the program – and providing a fun, ‘80s-esque design theme.

The Pride Festival will bring the usual mix of frivolity and celebration, drag, arts events, active games and competitions, and family and youth events, but the upcoming festival has had a particular concentration on providing a more diverse range of events, and a focus on accessibility and inclusion.

As well as providing a time of celebration and community for the region’s local LGBTIQA+ community, the Albany Pride Festival has grown to become a tourist event for the region, bringing in hundreds of visitors providing a boost for the local economy – and a time to show off everything Albany/Kinjarling and the surrounding regions have to offer as a place to visit, and indeed, live.

Nails Must Be Kept Short: The Warm Up is the premiere showcase of music from new Australian musical by Sophie Davis and Laura McDonald, with music by Harry Collins.

This cutting-edge comedy satirises the damaging ideologies often present in religious institutions through the guise of a netball cult.

Worlds collide when The Untouchaballs, a q***r social team, get promoted to the big time - an elite league in Sydney's North. The league's golden girl, Bec, finds herself at a crossroads when the new players shake up the strict culture of the netball scene. As things heat up, both on and off the court, Bec must confront some uncomfortable truths. Can she take the heat? Will she be able to respect the 'no contact' rule when a new player in the opposition catches her eye?

Meanwhile, the q***r players are on a ride of their own, thrust into a world that doesn’t accept them. The pressure is on as the desire to belong turns a great sporting opportunity into a nightmare.

With a banging repertoire of contemporary rock-pop numbers, Nails Must Be Kept Short uses music and humour to dismantle the dangerous effects of oppressive ideologies. It's a chaotic, outrageous and unforgettable celebration of being exactly who you are.

It’s 11:00pm and our trans-masculine narrator is in a deserted Officeworks. They are playing “Comfort, Spin, Travel”, a game designed to test the efficacy of wheely chairs.

A playful exploration of family, community, and gender identity, Comfort, Spin, Travel explores the responsibility placed on trans people to advocate, educate, and be endlessly patient. How do we measure the usefulness of a person? And what happens when you stop playing the game?

A crew of amateur documentary filmmakers convince a timid recluse, Sam, to let them film him for a “quick” university project. Seven years later they are still filming. The constant gaze of the camera corrodes Sam into a dark, desperate imitation of the crew's ideal subject. Until he is no longer controllable, no longer just a subject but a force of subjugation.
He is abandoned. Alone for the first time in years. With no camera, no director and no audience, Sam is left to wade through the waters of person and persona. Feeling himself sink, he turns to the footage of the last seven years.
Act Natural is a q***r ontological thriller that explores the performativity of gender and sexuality - can you truly decipher the line between a performed self and a true self?

Sometimes the longest friendships are the most complicated ones. Warren and Emily have been best friends since high school, suffering together through sh*tty teachers, coming out and failed relationships. Since Warren’s transition, it’s become obvious that there are lots of things they’re not saying to each other. In one conversation at a pub, it all comes out.

Back to Birdy explores the relationship between trans men and q***r women, issuing a call for empathy and understanding in our own backyard.

Etcetera Etcetera is a drag superstar on the rise – but there’s some unresolved artistic conflict in her past. It’s time for her to open up about her struggles at film school and breaking into the film industry as a gender rebel and less-than-mainstream artist.

Come along and discover everything she didn’t learn at film school in a hilarious and jaw-dropping interpretation of the history of cinema. Watch as she plays characters straight from the silver screen and shows some of her own films she made in film school. Life is a movie – and she’s the star. Get the popcorn ready!
