Meet the Committee – Zana Sheary

Zana Sheary is an Arboricultural Consultant and founder of Paperbark Technologies, and has recently been elected Secretary of ArbWest.

Zana is an experienced consultant with a strong focus on sustainable tree management and retaining trees wherever possible. Through Paperbark Technologies, she works with local governments, developers and landowners, providing advice on tree health, risk, protection and management.

Passionate about tree retention, Zana advocates for practical solutions that protect Perth’s existing trees and contribute to a healthier, more resilient urban forest.

What should be the ArbWest Committee’s key priorities over the next 12 months?
“I believe key priorities should include relevant training and networking opportunities, stronger member engagement, improved career pathways and continued advocacy for professional arboriculture and WA’s urban forest,” Zana says.

Meet the Committee – Joe Carriera
Joe Carriera is the General Manager of Beaver Tree Services and a long-standing member of the ArbWest Committee, having served in a number of roles over the years, including Vice President and Treasurer.

Joe is passionate about professional tree care, safety in the industry and the important role arborists play in protecting and growing Perth’s urban tree canopy. He is a strong advocate for raising industry standards, supporting arborists and ensuring our profession continues to contribute to a greener, healthier and more sustainable Perth.

What do you think should be the ArbWest Committee’s key priorities over the next 12 months?
“I would like the committee to focus on strengthening the arboriculture industry in WA by providing more resources, professional development, and using available funds to promote ArbWest's key values and the benefits we provide to members through training, information sessions and other initiatives.

I’d also like to see stronger collaboration with other industry organisations to share knowledge and create a more coordinated approach that benefits the entire arboriculture industry in WA.”

Meet the Committee – Dave Crispin

Dave Crispin is the President of ArbWest, and has recently been re-elected for his second term.

Dave is a Diploma (Cert V) qualified Professional Consultant and Senior Arborist with Treeswest Australia. He is passionate about protecting WA’s tree canopy, raising industry standards and supporting a stronger arboriculture industry across Western Australia.

“When I was asked what we can all do to strengthen and improve the arboricultural industry in Western Australia, I kept coming back to one simple thought: our greatest strength has always been our people,” Dave says.

“As President of ArbWest, I want to build an association where every member feels they belong and where every voice is valued. Growing our membership is a priority—not just in numbers, but by encouraging students, apprentices, climbers, consultants, local government officers, educators and allied industries to become part of a vibrant and supportive professional community.

“I also want ArbWest to better reflect the diversity of our industry by welcoming people of all backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, because a stronger mix of ideas leads to a stronger profession. We must continue to invest in mentoring, education and knowledge sharing so that experienced arborists can inspire and guide those entering the industry.

By working together, supporting one another and speaking with a united voice, we can continue to raise professional standards, strengthen our influence and ensure the value of trees and the people who care for them is recognised across Western Australia. I believe the future of our industry is incredibly positive, and I look forward to working alongside all of you to help shape that future.”

The changing role of arborists

Why arborists should do more than care for trees — they can help create homes for wildlife too.

From retaining habitat trees and creating artificial hollows to repurposing logs and protecting nesting sites, habitat creation is becoming an important part of modern arboriculture — and a growing opportunity for arborist businesses.

🌳 What a great AGM last week!
We had a fantastic evening at WA Wildlife, with plenty to celebrate.
AI for Arborists was a huge success.
Sarah Thomson from Online Social Butterfly shared practical tips and tricks on how AI can save time, reduce admin and make running a business easier. The lucky members who attended also received a FREE three-hour AI consultation for their business, government subsidised and valued at $110.

💰 Treasurer Steve Barker presented some very positive figures, showing ArbWest remains in a strong financial position while continuing to carefully manage members’ funds.
🌳 Dave Crispin gave his President’s Report, reflecting on just how much ArbWest has achieved over the past year – and with plenty of events and initiatives already planned, the year ahead is shaping up to be another busy one.
🎤 A big thank you to Joe Carriera, who kept the evening running smoothly as our MC.
