Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia - AHCWA AHCWA is the peak body for Aboriginal health in Western Australia. We work to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal people and their communities.

The Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia strives to strengthen and promote the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector Model of Care, and the delivery of comprehensive, holistic and culturally secure primary health care services; empowering Aboriginal people to achieve health equality in their communities. We exist to support and act on behalf of our 24 Member Services across the state, offering support, advocacy and influence; building capacity, and actively responding to their individual and collective needs. Our vision is for Aboriginal people to enjoy the same level of health and wellbeing as all Western Australians, and we support and strengthen our Member Services to achieve excellence in the delivery of health care. AHCWA leads and influences the state and national Aboriginal policy agenda as determined by our Member Services and works to grow and advance the capacity and capability of AHCWA and our Member Services for long term sustainability. The organisation reserves the right to hide or remove comments that detract from constructive engagement. This includes comments containing offensive, abusive, or discriminatory language; those including misinformation or potentially harmful health advice; content that violates privacy or confidentiality; comments promoting commercial products or services; and spam or content irrelevant to the discussion. When comments are removed, the moderator should keep a record of the content and reason for removal to ensure consistency in moderation practices and to identify patterns that may require proactive management.

40 years of KAMS!

On Friday 9 October, we came together in Broome to celebrate four decades of Aboriginal leadership, community control, and working together for Kimberley Aboriginal people.

From our beginnings as a cooperative between two Aboriginal health services in 1986, KAMS has grown alongside our Member Services and communities.

We remain an organisation of Aboriginal people, for Aboriginal people, controlled by Aboriginal people.

Our vision remains: “All Kimberley Aboriginal people are empowered to be strong, healthy and connected through Aboriginal community-controlled services”.

Thank you to our founders, Elders, Aboriginal Health Workers, past and present directors and staff, Member Services, and partners who have built and sustained KAMS. We also remember those who are no longer with us, whose contributions remain part of our story.

Together, we celebrate 40 years and look ahead to the next chapter.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, AHCWA staff dressed in pink to show support and raise awareness. We played ‘What’s in the Pink Bag?’—a conversation starter to learn important facts about breast cancer, including when and how to check, and what to look for.

Aboriginal women experience higher rates of breast cancer mortality—this highlights the importance of early detection and access to culturally safe healthcare.

Know what is normal for your body and yarn with your healthcare provider if you notice something that is new or unusual for you. BreastScreen WA provides free breast screening mammograms for women aged 40 and over, with women aged 50–74 encouraged to attend every two years.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which aims to highlight the devastating impact of Australia’s second most commonly diagnosed cancer and work toward zero deaths.

Despite the survival rate having increased to 92 per cent since 1994, breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer diagnosis for Aboriginal women. More so, it is the second leading cause of cancer death.

To improve outcomes, it is vital to implement regular self-exams to know your own body and quickly catch anything out of the ordinary. If you do notice any unusual change, be sure to visit your local AMS and yarn with your doctor. Breastscreen WA also offers free breast screenings every two years for women over 40.
