Each year, Homeless Memorial Day offers a moment to pause, reflect, and remember the lives of people who have died after experiencing homelessness.

For our member St Bart's, this day holds deep meaning, both for the people we support, our team and for our wider community who walk alongside them.
It is a time not only to honour those lost, but also to recognise the humanity, dignity, and stories behind every life.

Homeless Memorial Day matters.

Homelessness is more than the absence of housing, it is also living with trauma, poor health, and social isolation. For many, it can significantly reduce life expectancy.

In Western Australia, approximately 9,700 people experience homelessness each night, and the average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is around 50 years.

For the people supported at St Bart’s, this day is about recognition and a space for grief and healing. It ensures those who are often unseen are remembered and brings us together to support one another.

This day reminds us that we are all people with experiences, relationships, and futures deserving of care and compassion.

On Monday 22nd June, St Bart’s will join St George’s Cathedral to honour the lives of those lost to homelessness with 50 bell tolls and 50 candles. You are welcome to join everyone next Monday afternoon.

🪩 Feedback Friday 🪩

This Feedback Friday we're going retro as we're highlighting the work of our Resilient Futures (RF) team!

Our RF team drafts estate planning documents for older Australians free of charge. For many RF clients, reaching out for legal help is something they've never done before. The fact that they also have to divulge information about personal challenges—such as family estrangements—makes the prospect of seeing an estate planning lawyer even more daunting.

That's why creating a welcoming and supportive environment is so important to our RF team. Recently the team—and in particular, our legal assistant, Haylee—received lovely feedback from a client who thanked the team for putting them at ease.

Knowing that our clients feel heard, respected and comfortable is one of the greatest compliments that we can receive 💜

This week is Men's Health Week 🫀🧠

Did you know that 2 in 3 men wait too long before seeing their doctor when something changes?

Many men feel pressure to push through challenges on their own, but reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness 💪

Today, we gave each of the amazing men at Midlas a little care package with a treat and a coffee on us. We're hoping that it gives them a chance to take five and check in with themselves and each other.

This Refugee Week, we're celebrating the incredible contributions refugees make to our communities ⚽

Australia's diversity is one of our greatest strengths and nowhere is that more visible this month than on the football field. Four members of the Socceroos' 2026 World Cup squad—Nestory Irankunda, Mohamed Touré, Awer Mabil, and Miloš Degenek— are from refugee backgrounds.

Their stories began in different parts of the world, but through courage, opportunity and perseverance, they have gone on to represent Australia on the world stage and inspire the next generation 💛💚

This Refugee Week, let's celebrate the many ways refugees contribute to Australia—not only on the field, but in our schools, workplaces, and neighbourhoods.

We wish a peaceful and blessed New Year to our Muslim colleagues, clients, and community.

Marking the beginning of the Hijri calendar and the month of Muharram, this occasion is observed in different ways across Muslim communities. For many, it is a time of reflection and spiritual connection, while for others it is a sacred period of remembrance and mourning.

May the year ahead bring peace, health, and fulfilment.

Our office will be closed from 11.30 am on Wednesday, 17 June, to allow our staff to attend cultural awareness training. This training is part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring that our team is well equipped to meet the needs of the community we serve.

Operations will resume as normal on Thursday, 18 June.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), an opportunity for us to unite against the abuse, mistreatment, and neglect of older people.

Elder abuse can take many forms, with financial abuse being the most common. Midlas believes that everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and in control of their future. That's why we created our Resilient Futures (RF) team—to help combat financial abuse by providing free Wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney to older West Australians.

Our RF team recently had the privilege of attending a Grandcarers WA support group in Gidgegannup to speak about the importance of future planning. The grandcarers they met left a lasting impression—their strength, resilience and selflessness were truly inspiring. From what we've heard, the words on the image only begin to capture how remarkable they are!

It's people like our grandcarers that remind us exactly why we're committed to the fight against elder abuse, one plan at a time 💜

On Wednesday (10 June), our CEO Angie attended the Western Australian Housing Forum, hosted by Patrick Gorman MP, alongside leaders from the housing, homelessness and community sectors.

The forum provided an opportunity for organisations working directly with the community to share their experiences in the hope of shaping government responses to the housing crisis.

Angie later reflected on the importance of the discussion:

“The morning was an excellent opportunity to connect stakeholders and representatives from all levels of government to discuss one of the most pressing issues facing our community.

Safe, suitable and affordable housing is a fundamental need for every person in Western Australia, no matter where they live.

By providing services on the ground, Midlas sees firsthand the importance of ensuring that members of the community get the support they need. To help our community thrive, we not only need homes, but the support services and programs that help people build secure and stable lives”.

The Centre for Women's Safety and Wellbeing was pleased to join our family and domestic violence sector colleagues and other key stakeholders at yesterday's Housing Forum. Federal Housing Minister Clare O'Neil MP and State Housing Minister John Carey addressed attendees on the work being done across all levels of Government so that all Western Australians have access to safe, stable and affordable homes. Federal and State Parliamentary representatives also joined discussions to hear firsthand feedback, suggestions and challenges faced by too many when seeking a place to call home.

For victim-survivors of family and domestic violence, access to safe accommodation can be life changing and life saving. Women and children experiencing violence must be able to find safety when and where they need it, and be supported to access long-term, stable and affordable housing. We look forward to continuing these conversations with our State and Federal representatives.
