🐑 Swan Rotary Small Mob Shearing Day

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the Gidgegannup Showgrounds!

The morning is filling up, but we still have booking spots available in the afternoon. Please contact us as soon as possible to secure your time. 😊

A few important reminders for those bringing sheep:
Please keep your sheep dry in the days leading up to Shearing Day.
Sheep must also remain dry while being transported to the showgrounds, so please ensure your trailer is covered with a tarp.
Please reduce their feed during the 24 hours beforehand for their welfare during shearing.
Animals must be in good health. Acceptance for shearing remains at the shearer’s discretion.

Come along for brekkie and a cuppa! All funds raised support Swan Rotary projects within our community.

Opening doors through literacy 📚

As schools celebrate Book Week and we look ahead to Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month in September, we are reminded that learning to read is about so much more than books.

Literacy gives people confidence, independence and the ability to participate more fully in everyday life. It opens the door to education, employment and opportunities that can change not only one life, but entire families and communities.

This week, the world farewelled Dolly Parton. While she will always be remembered for her music, one of her most enduring legacies was born from a deeply personal experience. Her father never learned to read, inspiring Dolly to create Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that gives children a free, age-appropriate book every month from birth to age five. Since its launch, the Imagination Library has gifted more than 300 million books to children around the world.

There is a wonderful Rotary connection, since 2009 Rotary International has partnered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, with Rotary clubs helping promote the program, raise funds and bring books into the hands of children in their communities.

Dolly herself described Rotary as a “wonderful partner” and shared a simple hope: “that no child will ever have to grow up without books.” Her story is a powerful reminder that one person's experience can inspire change for generations, and that when people and organisations work together, that change can reach even further.

Every book shared, every child encouraged and every person helped to read brings us one step closer to a world where everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

📚 This September, Rotary celebrates the power of literacy — and the doors it can open.

Building Ideas. Building Community. Building Change. 🧱

This week's Rotary meeting looked a little different... there was LEGO® everywhere!

Using the LEGO® Serious Play® method, members worked together to build models representing one of Rotary's Areas of Focus. Each creation sparked discussion, different perspectives and fresh ideas about how we can make a greater impact in our community and around the world.

Research has shown that hands-on learning engages multiple parts of the brain, encouraging creativity, deeper thinking and more meaningful conversations. Sometimes the best ideas don't start with words—they start with building.

This fun session facilitated by President Sue and was an engaging evening filled with laughter, teamwork and some wonderfully imaginative creations. A great reminder that innovation often comes from looking at challenges in a different way.

At Rotary, we're always learning, collaborating and finding new ways to create positive change.

🌟5 Minutes with Our Rotary Leaders🌟

This month, we're shining a light on David and recognising an incredible 52 years of service through Rotary.

What inspired you to become a Rotarian?

I was inspired to become a Rotarian after attending meetings as a guest of my father-in-law, who was a Rotarian. I was impressed by the programs being undertaken and the positive impact they had on the community.

When my father-in-law was chosen to charter a new Rotary club, I was invited to join as a charter member, and I have remained a Rotarian ever since.

What do you enjoy most about being a Rotarian?

One of the things I value most is being able to contribute to projects that support communities and humanitarian programs locally, nationally and around the world. I also enjoy the friendships that Rotary fosters and the opportunity to work alongside like-minded people while making a difference.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining Rotary?

Rotary is a dynamic worldwide organisation committed to improving people's lives through the collective efforts of almost 1.2 million members across the globe.

What has been your proudest achievement in Rotary?

Over the past 52 years, I have served in many leadership roles, including Club President on five occasions and Assistant District Governor for three terms of three years each. I have also been honoured to receive the Paul Harris Fellow recognition three times for my contribution to Rotary programs.

My wife and I have attended numerous District Rotary Conferences as well as three Rotary International Conventions, creating many lasting memories along the way.

What does "Service Above Self" mean to you?

To me, "Service Above Self" means contributing to projects that improve the lives of others and putting the needs of others before your own.

🤝 Strong partnerships create stronger communities.

For almost a decade, Swan Rotary has proudly supported stroke education and awareness through our Stroke Education Scholarship, enabling a staff member from St John of God Midland Public & Private Hospitals to attend the National Stroke Conference each year.

Since 2017, the scholarship has reflected our Club's commitment to investing in healthcare professionals, supporting them to broaden their knowledge and bring the latest advances in stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation back to benefit our local community.

We are grateful for our longstanding association with Dr Tim Bates, whose dedication to improving stroke care and educating both health professionals and the wider community has inspired this initiative from its beginning.

Swan Rotary is also proud to partner with Indigo Junction, an organisation that shares our commitment to strengthening our community through connection, education and support.

This upcoming community event is a wonderful example of these partnerships in action. Hosted at St John of God Midland Hospital, the event provides an opportunity for people affected by stroke, their families, carers and community members to come together to learn, share experiences and connect. We are delighted that Dr Tim Bates will be presenting during the afternoon.

COMMUNITY EVENT SPOTLIGHT

Come together to yarn about stroke in Midland

Join local health professionals and community members for a morning of yarning, sharing and activities focused on stroke prevention, recovery and healing.

Lunch and art and craft activities will be provided along with the chance to meet friendly health researchers. There will also be a special talk by Dr Tim Bates at 1:00PM.

Share your lived experience and help shape conversations around healing and rehabilitation.

Swan Rotary was proud to recognise Bill Scanlan as a double sapphire Paul Harris Fellow in acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to our Club and community

The Paul Harris Fellow is one of Rotary's highest honours, recognising exceptional service and commitment to making a difference in the community.

Bill's leadership, expertise and willingness to support Club projects have helped strengthen Swan Rotary and expand our ability to serve the community. He has been instrumental in the success of the Bassendean Markets since their inception, dedicating countless hours to their organisation and growth.

Bill truly embodies Rotary's motto of Service Above Self.
