Since 1990, the day has been an official holiday.

For those interested in cycling - the Giro d Italia (bike race) starts tomorrow from Bulgaria before going on to Italy, screening on SBS/ SBS on demand.

There are 3 stages in Bulgaria, beginning in Nessebar on the Black Sea;

Stage1: Nessebar to Burgas – Fri 8th May starts 8pm

Stage2: Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo - Sat 9th May starts 6:30pm

Stage3: Plovdiv to Sofia – Sun 10th May starts 7:25pm
