CYCLIST ACCESS CHANGES THIS WEEKEND

Cyclists travelling through Thebarton should plan for a temporary detour this weekend due to works at the West Thebarton Road, Ashwin Parade and South Road intersection.

From 8pm Friday 28 August until 6am Monday 31 August:

• West Thebarton Road will be closed between Ann Street and South Road
• The usual east-west crossing of South Road will be unavailable
• Cyclists and pedestrians will be detoured via the Walter Street pedestrian crossing

Signage and traffic controllers will be in place to help people navigate around the works. Please allow some extra time and take care through the area.

What should the future of e-bike regulation look like in South Australia?

BikeSA has published our submission to the State Government’s review of e-bike rules. We are advocating for an approach that improves safety while protecting the accessibility, freedom and transport benefits that e-bikes provide.

Our submission calls for:

• Legal e-bikes to remain regulated as bicycles
• Clearer product standards and information for consumers
• Greater responsibility for importers and sellers
• Recognition of purpose-built e-cargo cycles
• Strong action against illegal high-powered devices and dangerous riding
• Speed rules based on the riding environment, not the bicycle’s power source
• Better crash data, rider education and cycling infrastructure

At the heart of our position is a simple principle: a safe and compliant e-bike is still a bicycle.

🚲 Mike Turtur Bikeway opening getting closer

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport has provided a further update on the new Mike Turtur Bikeway sections being delivered as part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects.

Following final safety audits in July, additional handrailing was identified as necessary before the new elevated shared-use paths at Morphett Road and Marion and Cross Roads can open.

Design work for the additional handrails has now been completed, with materials being ordered and some components already in fabrication.

The project team is currently targeting completion of the remaining works and reopening of the Mike Turtur Bikeway by the end of September.

These new sections will provide an important improvement to the connection between Glenelg and the city, and it’s great to see the project moving into its final stages.

We know plenty of riders are looking forward to getting onto the new bikeway, and we’ll share the confirmed opening date as soon as it’s available.

In just 4 weeks, BikeSA’s Annual Tour sets off on a 9-day journey through four of South Australia’s most celebrated food and wine regions.

Around 600km of riding takes you through the Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale, with BikeSA taking care of the logistics along the way.

And there’s plenty to look forward to off the bike too.

Great to see works getting underway on Adelaide’s second separated bikeway! 🚲👏

The Peacock Road Cycle Route is another important step towards a safer, better-connected cycling network across our city, linking directly with the Mike Turtur Bikeway and making everyday trips by bike more comfortable and accessible.

Congratulations to the City of Adelaide on progressing this important piece of cycling infrastructure. We’re looking forward to seeing it completed and, hopefully, many more separated bikeways to follow.

9 days, ~600km, and a route that reads like a highlights reel of South Australia.

Ride sections of the actual Santos Tour Down Under course, then descend Mengler Hill with the whole Barossa Valley opening up below you.
Follow the Riesling Trail into Clare, with a rest day free to visit Skillogalee, Kilikanoon or historic Martindale Hall.
Wander Hahndorf's German heritage lanes - cafés, galleries, breweries.
Stand under the d'Arenberg Cube in McLaren Vale.
Finish by riding the stunning SA coast into Glenelg, almost 600km behind you.
