🌺 Faces of Our History: The Courage of Emilia Enberg.

On this Anzac Day, as we honour those who served and sacrificed, we would like to share the story of an extraordinary woman from our shared heritage: Emilia Enberg, a Russian nurse who wore the Australian uniform during the First World War.

Born in , Emilia made Australia her home and answered the call to serve. In 1917, she enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service. While the Russian were fighting on the front lines, Emilia served on a different battlefield — one of healing, compassion, and endurance.

Her journey of service:
• 🌍 Service across the world: Emilia worked in demanding conditions in India, on hospital ships, and in England, caring for the wounded and the broken.
• ⚖️ A complex legacy: Like many migrants of her time, her path was not without hardship. After the war, she was issued an “Alien Registration Certificate” — a reminder of the challenges faced by those trying to find recognition and belonging in their adopted country.
• ❤️ The spirit of mercy: Despite the upheaval of the era, her dedication to her patients never wavered. She represents the thousands of Russian-speaking migrants who helped shape the fabric and spirit of .

Today, we remember Emilia not only as a nurse, but as a sister, a pioneer, and a hero of two homelands. Her courage lives on as part of our shared history and identity.

Lest we forget. 🇦🇺🌿
