Today on National Sorry Day, we acknowledge and reflect on the grief, loss and lasting harm caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, Country and communities. These children are now known as the Stolen Generations.
Government policies severed family ties and cultural connections, and disrupted the passing of language, knowledge and identity.
The first National Sorry Day was on 26 May 1998, one year after the release of the Bringing Them Home report, which documented the experiences of Stolen Generations survivors and included recommendations to address ongoing injustice.
Today is a day to listen, learn, and understand the significance of National Sorry Day. We are committed to truth-telling and to walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in healing and reconciliation.
