Statement from the Islamic Society of South Australia
The Islamic Society of South Australia unequivocally condemns the shooting and senseless attack that occurred in Bondi yesterday.
As a nation, Australia has united in condemning this act of violence. This collective response reflects who we are as Australians: a society that rejects hatred, violence, and the targeting of innocent people.
Our heartfelt condolences go to the victims, their families, and members of the Jewish community. No community should ever feel targeted or unsafe because of their faith, background, or identity.
At moments like this, words matter, but actions matter even more.
What the nation witnessed in Bondi was not only a tragedy, but also an extraordinary act of humanity. Ahmed Al-Ahmed, now confirmed as the individual who intervened, risked his life, was shot twice, and yet managed to disarm the attacker and save countless lives. His actions reflect the very best of Islam and the very best of humanity, courage rooted in compassion, the sanctity of life, and moral responsibility, not in identity, politics, or anger.
Ahmed Al-Ahmed represents every human being who chooses humanity over hatred. In stark contrast, those who commit such acts of violence represent only evil, an evil that targets innocent people, including children, and must be rejected without hesitation or excuse.
His bravery did more than save lives in that moment. It helped prevent further fear, division, and potential retaliation at a critical time for our nation. By choosing courage over chaos, he helped protect not only those present, but also the broader social fabric of Australia. We pray for his full and speedy recovery.
At the same time, we acknowledge the genuine concern felt within parts of the Muslim community, particularly fears of retaliation or opportunistic attacks against mosques, Muslim women, or visibly identifiable members of our community. We confirm that South Australia Police remain in ongoing contact with the Society and are actively monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of all communities.
We urge calm, restraint, and responsible leadership. This is a time to reject collective blame, avoid speculation, and uphold the values of fairness, equal protection, and social cohesion.
The Islamic Society of South Australia remains steadfast in its commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of innocent life, not only in words, but through actions that strengthen and safeguard our shared nation.
