Hummingbird House

Hummingbird House Hummingbird House is Queensland's only children's hospice and one of only three children's hospices in Australia.

Right now, there are over 5,700 Queensland families loving and caring for a child with a life-limiting condition. Sadly, this means that their child is not expected to reach 18 years of age. Hummingbird House is Queensland’s only children’s hospice, and one of only three children’s hospices in Australia. We provide specialised paediatric palliative care services to babies, children and young peopl

e with a life-limiting condition, helping them make every moment precious when time is short. Since 2016, we have welcomed hundreds of families from right across Queensland into our warm embrace, providing them with kindness, compassion, and care as they navigate their lives with a child with a life-limiting condition. Hummingbird House is a joint initiative of Hummingbird House Foundation and Wesley Mission Queensland. The life-changing services we offer wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the Queensland community, who ensure our service is here for every family that needs us, at no cost to them.

Your support enables us to continue our mission to help families create precious memories with their loved ones. Thanks to you, we're proud to share a snippet of the impact that we've had for 2024/25:

💜 339 families received support around Queensland
💜 74 new families joined our community
💜 517 hours of hydrotherapy sessions were held at the House

And more! We have your support to thank for a big part of that, especially after last year's Tax Appeal. We're hoping to beat those numbers and extend our services to more families who need it, while deepening our level of care to families already with us.

🚨 2026 TAX APPEAL UPDATE 🚨

Just $60 is enough to gift one hour of palliative nursing to a child with a life limiting condition, and greater contributions help in so many other ways. From daily creative sessions for guests to events like Remembrance Day, your support is carried through the hands and hearts of our nurses, staff and volunteers. 💜

We're two weeks into our 2026 Tax Appeal, so please continue to donate what you can. Link in comment 🔗

We recently welcomed Jenny, Joan and Lara from the Order of the Eastern Star - Toowoomba Chapter to Hummingbird House.

The visit gave Jenny, a bereaved aunt, the opportunity to hold space and reflect on the care and compassion that was shown to her family at such a difficult time in their lives. 💜

Reminiscing with Family Support Practitioner Taki, Jenny shared what a difference it made to have Hummingbird House guide them on their paediatric palliative care journey. A journey that no family should have to navigate alone, thanks to the generous support of organisations like the Order of the Eastern Star. ✨

Please help support families like Jenny’s by donating to our 2026 Tax Appeal. Link in comments 🔗

Hummingbird House has always been a special place for guests, families and staff. It's a home like no other, where precious memories are made and families get to spend time with their loved ones the way they want.

"We really pride ourselves on being a home to families," says manager Kelly, "welcoming them with a warm embrace as they come through the door and providing an environment that's able to meet their care needs, but more importantly, feels like a home from home."

Love is at the heart of this year's Tax Appeal. Please support Queensland's only children's hospice so that we can continue to care for children with life-limiting conditions and their families 💜 Click the link in our comments to donate today.

💜 Meet Brian, one of our wonderful volunteers at Hummingbird House! 💜

Brian first learned about Hummingbird House and the work we do in 2023. A year later, he decided to join us. "At the time, my thoughts went to my 10 healthy grandchildren... I thought about what I would have wanted for them if any of them had needed that level of care. I would certainly have wanted them to have access to a facility like Hummingbird House."

Since then, Brian has been an invaluable helping hand in our garden and outdoor areas. He joins us one day a week doing his favourite activity: keeping outdoor areas looking tidy and welcoming for families who wish to gather and spend quality time together in them.

One of Brian's favourite pastimes in the House (besides the great morning teas and lunches!) is to catch up with other volunteers and staff every Thursday. "My coworker Athol, who is 94 but as sharp as a tack, often comes up with a little gem that amuses me."

Volunteering at Hummingbird House is something Brian cherishes to this day. When asked what he would tell his past self before volunteering with us, he said, "In my life I have found it hard to try new things, but in this case, I would have told myself to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. Volunteering at Hummingbird House is one of the most fulfilling things I have done."

We're so glad to have someone like Brian on the team, and we truly appreciate the beautiful work he does to keep our garden thriving! 💜🏡

Friday's are a special day at Hummingbird House, as our team come together to regroup, recharge and reconnect over lunch ⭐

Last week's celebration was even more special, as our staff celebrated National Palliative Care Week, alongside the debut of Hummingbird House's Nurse/Carer of the Year award in recognition of International Nurses Day , which went to a very surprised (and incredibly humble) Kirsty!

Kirsty is one of our much loved enrolled nurses, who has been a part of our team for the past five years. Her colleagues describe her as kind, compassionate, proactive and hardworking--and we're so grateful for the care she provides guests and families at the House.

Please join us in congratulating Kirsty, and celebrating our wonderful team at Hummingbird House 💜

Please join us in congratulating Athol for his nomination for the Queensland Volunteer of the Year Award! 💜🎉

For nearly a decade, Athol Alcorn has been a dedicated volunteer at Hummingbird House. He has raised more than $35,000 for Hummingbird House through endurance challenges—including walking the Kokoda Track at 87 and completing a 300-kilometre charity walk at 90—and was recognised as a Westfield Local Hero in 2022.

At 94 years of age and legally blind, Athol volunteers two full days each week, travelling by public transport to help maintain the hospice gardens and outdoor spaces.

His careful and consistent work helps ensure children with life-limiting conditions and their families can enjoy safe, welcoming and accessible outdoor environments during some of life’s most difficult moments.

A big thank you to Athol for his incredible years of volunteering, and a shout out to his well-deserved nomination! He is so loved by everyone at Hummingbird House and we are incredibly grateful to have him on our team 🙌💜

💜Our 2026 Tax Appeal is now live 💜

For 10 years, Hummingbird House has had the privilege of walking alongside Queensland families, supporting them through moments of immense joy and indescribable pain.
The one constant we have witnessed over this time is love. 💜

The unconditional love that binds a family together.

The compassionate love that unites our community of supporters.

Love has made this House a 'home' to countless families over the past 10 years and will continue to shine bright in the years ahead.

Thank you for giving Hummingbird House the gift of love. Please help us continue to make a difference in the lives of guests and families in our care: https://www.wmq.org.au/tax-appeal-hbh-meta

Recently, Hummingbird House was selected as the charity of the day for the The Council Of Queensland Insurance Brokers (CQiB) golf day, where we joined hands with 180 golfers from Nudgee Golf Club Incorporated and weathered an unusually chilly autumn day, to support Queensland's only children's hospice.

To keep things interesting, our team got to add a cheeky little 'cheat hole' to the game, where every team that donated got an automatic hole-in-one, resulting in a generous $6,075 being raised! 🏌️

At the end of the cold and wet day, a rainbow broke out from behind the clouds, reminding us of the beauty of community coming together to honour the families we walk alongside 🌈🙌

Our heartfelt thanks goes to CQiB, their event sponsors, and members for another amazing golf day in support of Hummingbird House!

Drumroll please... we are absolutely thrilled to once again be chosen as the beneficiary of choice by Brisbane Convoy for Kids for 2026! 🥳🎉

Last year, Brisbane Convoy4Kids (BC4K) raised a staggering $365,000 for Hummingbird House—a gesture of support that has truly made a difference for us and families in our care—so we're incredible excited and honoured to be their charity of choice once more.

“Our members have voted... and it’s appropriate considering this year’s colour is purple," said Tracy, BC4K’s President. "Hummingbird House aligns with our core values and goes directly to the children in need. How can we not?”

So pop it in your calendar: 07 November 2026, the first Saturday in November 📅 Hundreds and hundreds of trucks will travel in convoy from Larapinta to Redcliffe Showgrounds, all in support of Hummingbird House and we could not be more grateful. 🙌

Our sincerest thank yous to BC4K’s Committee, members and supporters for choosing us for the 12th year. 💜
