Hummingbird House

Hummingbird House Hummingbird House is Queensland's only children's hospice and one of only three children's hospices in Australia.

Right now, there are over 5,700 Queensland families loving and caring for a child with a life-limiting condition. Sadly, this means that their child is not expected to reach 18 years of age. Hummingbird House is Queensland’s only children’s hospice, and one of only three children’s hospices in Australia. We provide specialised paediatric palliative care services to babies, children and young peopl

e with a life-limiting condition, helping them make every moment precious when time is short. Since 2016, we have welcomed hundreds of families from right across Queensland into our warm embrace, providing them with kindness, compassion, and care as they navigate their lives with a child with a life-limiting condition. Hummingbird House is a joint initiative of Hummingbird House Foundation and Wesley Mission Queensland. The life-changing services we offer wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the Queensland community, who ensure our service is here for every family that needs us, at no cost to them.

Fatherhood does not end with the death of a child, anymore than grief and heartache disappear over time.

Today we send love and care to all the fathers that hold their children in their hearts, but not in their arms.

We see your grief, we honour your love, and we remember your child with you 💜

We were recently honoured to attend the annual Ridgettes' Play 4 Piper Day at the Brisbane Netball Association Carnival, which celebrates the life and legacy of Piper Uzelac ✨

In 2018, at just 14 years of age, Piper lost her battle to leukaemia and received after death care at Hummingbird House surrounded by her loving mum, dad, and little sister Kendra.

Each year, Play 4 Piper Day brings the Uzelac family's community together to remember Piper, honour her bright spirit, and raise funds for Hummingbird House.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to the Ridgettes Netball Club for continuing to support the Uzelac family, and pause to remember and celebrate their beautiful girl 💙🧡

Like these, of beautiful, sweet Evie, enjoying a special moment with Taki at the House. 🌞 Evie's stay was a particularly special one as we laughed, played, and celebrated her birthday surrounded by her loving tribe of family and friends. 🎂🎉

Thank you for filling the House with your joyful presence Miss Evie, we loved having you! 💜

A heartfelt thank you to the beautiful team at Lisa's Lunches, who recently delivered 10 palliative care boxes to Hummingbird House for families receiving end of life care with us.

While there aren't a lot of things that can bring comfort to families at this time, a thoughtfully curated care package is a gentle and symbolic reminder that each of these families is surrounded by a community that cares.

We are so grateful to Lisa's Lunches for their ongoing generosity and regular support of Hummingbird House. Thank you especially to the amazing community that make these boxes possible - from nourishing snacks to lovingly made handmade blankets - wrapping the families we support with gentle love and care. 💜🏡

Six degrees of separation is a fact, not a theory, at Hummingbird House.

We recently received an incredibly generous gift of $6,000 from the Morayfield Freemasons - Lodge #95 UGLQ, followed by a surprise gift of $5,000 through Hand Heart Pocket's matched giving program.

Why Hummingbird House?

A lovely wife of one of the Brethren found an old Hummingbird House flyer at her workplace, and was so touched by what she read that she took it home and shared it with her husband.

The Lodge then committed to raising funds for the House, with Hand Heart Pocket—the charitable arm of Freemasons Queensland, and long-time supporters of Hummingbird House—generously matching their fundraising effort! ✨

We love these moments of serendipity which connect the community to the House! 🏡💜 Our heartfelt thanks goes to the Freemasons for their continued generosity and support.

HAPPY 21 SWEET LILY! 🎉

We were thrilled to recently celebrate Lily's 21st birthday at Hummingbird House, alongside her closest family and friends and all things Taylor Swift! 🎸

Lily was first referred to the House 10 years ago, when we had only just opened our doors to the community and finding our way as a new service. Over her time with us, we have enjoyed watching her giggles and laughs, love of great music, and splashes of joy in our pool. 🏡

In short, we have watched Lily bloom into the beautiful young woman she is today, and we could not be happier to share this wonderful milestone with her, and her family. 💜

Our warmest thanks to Sweet As Co. for creating the most beautiful cake for Lily's day, and to everyone else who went above and beyond to make it a truly memorable occasion! 🎂

Flashback to 2015-2016 when Hummingbird House took shape from the vision of a very special community into an actual House—filled with love and hope, as it looked to the future.

As we celebrate 10 years this year, we reflect on the love, compassion and care that this house has witnessed, and continues to show the families we're privileged to walk alongside.

Over this time, we've witnessed immense joy and heartbreaking sadness between these walls. But most of all, we have helped families create precious memories that they can hold for years to come 💜

We recently bid farewell to our beautiful friends, Paul and Mel, the dynamic duo behind the kitchen at Hummingbird House, who have nourished guests and families who have walked through our doors over the past 2.5 years with love and care.

The owner of two additional cafes onsite at Wheller Gardens, Paul made the difficult decision to step away from Hummingbird House in order to better balance his work life with his personal life and focus on the most important thing to him—his family.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Paul and Mel for the love and care they have shown at Hummingbird House, and to our team, for stepping up and being the cooks at their 'bring a plate to share' farewell! 💜🏡

Thank you also to our friends at Zenith Chefs, who are looking after our kitchen service while we find a team as special as Paul and Mel.

A heartfelt thank you to the Kalbar Sunflowers team for their continued support of Hummingbird House 💛🌻

We are incredibly grateful to have received this beautiful mural, created with the help of the community, which will now hold a special place in the House.

"Painted by local artist Maria Smith, alongside hundreds of visitors during this year's Kalbar Sunflower Festival, this special artwork is a lasting symbol of kindness, hope and community. We hope it brings comfort, colour and smiles to the children, families and staff at Hummingbird House for many years to come." said festival owner, Jenny Jenner.

Last year, the Kalbar Sunflower team also gifted a cuddle bed towards our perinatal program, which has become a much-cherished part of the House, providing families the opportunity to make lasting memories together.

We are so thankful for Jenny, Gail, and the rest of the team's ongoing generosity and support, which will make a real and lasting difference to the guests and families we walk alongside 💜🏡✨

It is with deep sadness, that Hummingbird House shares the news of the recent passing of our much-loved volunteer, Athol Alcorn.

A truly valued member of our team, Athol made the world around him better simply by showing up. With quiet humility, unwavering faith and a generous heart, he touched countless lives through his years of dedicated service to Hummingbird House.

For nearly a decade, Athol lovingly tended to the gardens and outdoor spaces at Hummingbird House, working through scorching summers and cool winters with quiet grace. At 94 years of age and despite living with legal blindness, he never let obstacles stand in the way of serving others and left a lasting impression on anyone lucky enough to cross paths with him.

Athol's determination was nothing short of inspiring. At 87, he walked the Kokoda Track, and just a few years later, at 90, he completed an extraordinary 300-kilometre charity walk that raised more than $35,000 for Hummingbird House.

In 2018, Athol was recognised as a Westfield Local Hero, raising an additional $10,000 for the House, and earlier this year he was proudly nominated for the Queensland Volunteer of the Year Award.

While these achievements were extraordinary, they were never what defined Athol. Those who knew him best will remember his kindness, humility and the gentle way he lived out his belief that every act of kindness matters. He never sought recognition, only satisfaction in knowing he was helping make life better for others.

We are deeply grateful for the gift of Athol's life and his faithful service to Hummingbird House. He reminded us that lasting change is often made through small, consistent acts of care, offered with love and without expectation.

Our heartfelt condolences are with Athol's family, friends, fellow volunteers and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest easy dear Athol. You will be so missed by us all. 💜
