The Common Good Au Proudly supporting The Prince Charles Hospital and Caboolture Hospital. Our research areas are health issues that touch nearly everyone in some way.

The Common Good, an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, exists to help people live healthier, for longer. Through the power of the collective, we support and facilitate the work of incredible researchers who are dedicated to making breakthroughs in the areas of heart disease, lung disease, mental health and dementia. Whether it be a friend, a family member, or a colleague, we all know someone who is impacted by at least one of these conditions. In turn, that means we all know someone who can benefit from funding research in these areas. By funding research, we can provide hope to those suffering today, and for future generations to come. The impacts of our research ripple right across the nation and the world. We're on a mission to sustain the work of our brilliant researchers so that they can continue to make life-saving and life-changing medical breakthroughs. And we want you to join us. Research is a long game, so we need to support and fund as many hours as possible to ensure no stone is left unturned in any of our research areas. Every hour of research gets us one step closer to a medical breakthrough. We are also incredibly proud to support hospital innovation and patient care initiatives at both The Prince Charles Hospital and Caboolture Hospital.

💜 Story No. 28 | 40 Stories for 40 Years
Patricia and Brenden O’Reilly:
How gratitude led to regular giving and an extraordinary difference

Patricia O’Reilly had her beautiful baby boy Brenden in 1970, but when he was about six months old, the GP discovered he had a very bad heart murmur.

They were referred to The Prince Charles Hospital and, following testing, Brenden was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot – a congenital heart defect where four conditions affect the structure of the heart.

“At that time doctors weren’t performing surgery on this condition on infants, and he had to wait until he was 4 years old,” Patricia recalled.

“Those years were hard … but thanks to the care and support from everyone at Charlie’s, he came through the operation very well.”

After relatively good health throughout his childhood, Brenden began to experience further heart problems at 18. When he was 36, he received a life-saving heart transplant at the very same hospital that had cared for him as an infant.

Gratitude for Brenden’s care became an important part of the O’Reilly family’s story. When Brenden celebrated his 40th birthday, he asked people to donate to The Prince Charles Hospital instead of buying him gifts.

Sadly, Brenden passed away in 2018, just shy of his 48th birthday.

For his mother Patricia, the gratitude she feels towards the hospital has never faded.

She became a regular giver to The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation in 2014, and more than a decade later, she continues to give to honour Brenden’s life and help other patients and families.

“Without the care of this hospital I wouldn’t be here right now.”

Big Jon was brought to The Prince Charles Hospital in septic shock in 2011.

In the 15 years since, he has faced many health challenges and has been hospitalised more than 400 times.

Jon credits this hospital and the medical professionals who’ve treated him over the years for saving his life.

He shows his gratitude in the ways he can: giving his time, sharing his story, and becoming one of the Foundation’s inaugural Community Ambassadors.

And this upcoming Giving Day, we’ve teamed up with 'Big Jon' Twartz, and we’re asking our community to GIVE BIG to care for the hospital that cares for you.

Our team from The Café for The Common Good had the pleasure of meeting Queensland legend and Get Ready Queensland Ambassador Jonathan Thurston at the launch of Get Ready Queensland Week.

More than 200 people attended the event at the Kedron Emergency Services Complex to highlight the importance of preparing for Queensland's upcoming disaster season.

Our staff brewed around 250 coffees, with thanks to Merlo Coffee, and prepared some delicious breakfast burgers for attendees.

With cafés and catering services operating across Queensland Health and emergency services locations, including our newest site at the Queensland Fire Department Headquarters in Albion, we're proud to support the people and organisations who serve our communities every day.

And the best part? Every purchase from our social enterprise helps support life-changing medical research and patient care through The Common Good.

Are you looking for a role where you can use your skills to turn your community connections into meaningful impact for others?

The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation is looking for a new Community Fundraising & Events Coordinator to join our team.

This role is based primarily at Caboolture Hospital. It involves working with local businesses, schools, community groups, hospital teams, volunteers and supporters to create fundraising opportunities, bring community events and initiatives to life, and help turn fundraising ideas into meaningful impact.

Our successful applicant will help grow local support for Caboolture Hospital and the community it serves, and make a difference for patients and their families who visit this hospital.

Whether it's supporting a community fundraiser, coordinating an event, or helping a local organisation get involved, you'll play an important role in helping people give back.

If this sounds like the kind of work you'd like to be part of, we'd love to hear from you.

Please submit your resume and a 1-page cover letter outlining why this role appeals to you and what you would bring to the role: https://tcg.org.au/applynow.

Recently, we brought our Community Ambassadors together in Caboolture for our Mid-Year Catch-Up, and it was fantastic to have so many of them there.

Launched as part of our 40-year milestone, the Community Ambassador Program celebrates people whose connection to The Prince Charles Hospital or Caboolture Hospital has inspired them to give back.

Our ambassadors include patients, family members, community leaders and local champions who have been touched by the care of the hospitals we support and are now choosing to pay it forward in their communities.

As our ambassador program is a volunteer-led initiative that supports stronger connections, participation, and wellbeing, including Caboolture and the broader Moreton Bay region in support of Caboolture Hospital, it was fitting to host it at Sports Central Caboolture

Our ambassadors are trusted connectors who bring people together and encourage others to get involved, and this catch-up was a chance to share updates from The Common Good, swap stories and ideas, and build new skills. They also took part in a hands-on MediaCast st workshop to build confidence in public speaking and sharing their stories.

A special thank you to the Community Activities Grant program from City of Moreton Bay for helping make the workshop possible. Our ambassadors now have more practical tools they can take back into their communities and put into action.

We’re excited to see what we do next as a community initiative.
