RATS Lunch 10th September 2025

16/08/2025

Happy 100th birthday to 4GR, Saturday 16 August 2025.

It was Sunday 16th August 1925, that 4GR (Gold Radio) began broadcasting as Queensland’s first commercial radio station, with a church service from St Stephens Presbyterian Church in Neil Street – 95 years before live streaming of Church Services would become a common occurrence! I wonder if there are any centenarians in Toowoomba today who were at that church service as babies or young children?

For those who grew up in Toowoomba, many will have fond memories of 4GR. For me, it was from the late 60’s. One of my earliest memories was getting Mum to request they play ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ on an afternoon when I was home from school, sick. Then listening to ‘Yes What’ just after 6pm in the evening, in the mid ‘70s, listening to the top 40 countdowns when I got my first pocket radio, watching the DJs in action at the Show every year, listening to the Breakfast Show in the Graham Healy years, and the advent of AM ‘Super Stereo’ in the mid-80s. I left Toowoomba for Brisbane in ’89, but have continued to follow the station when in Toowoomba or on-line in recent years.

A number of years ago, the 4GR website had a full history of the station in words and pictures – now gone. Hopefully someone still has this content stored somewhere. The current owners can’t even provide a station-specific website these days.

Thankfully those who were there 10 years ago on the occasion of 4GR’s 90th birthday had the foresight to put together a mini documentary on the history of this once great radio station, which was a big part of our lives in Toowoomba. Here is a link to that mini documentary.

Calling all RATS.

Get your tickets for Wednesday the 10th of September. Peter Greste has agreed to attend the lunch once again after the failed March event this year due to cyclone Alfred.

Peter is a former career television news foreign correspondent (Reuters, BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera) who was accused of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and found guilty of “falsifying news and having a negative impact on overseas perceptions of the country” in 2014 by Egyptian authorities, who released him after 400 days of a seven-year sentence, on the proviso that Australia retry him (Australia understandably did not). An Egyptian court retried him in 2015 in absentia and sentenced him to another three years.
Peter can no longer work as a foreign correspondent (his chosen career).

Many countries would arrest or detain him upon arrival (a foreign correspondent needs to be able to travel unimpeded to, well, foreign shores).

The Correspondent, feature film was released in Jan/Feb. It stars veteran actor Richard Roxborough playing Peter Greste
Production of “The Correspondent” wrapped in Sydney, Australia after being directed by Kriv Stenders, who enjoyed major success in Australia with “Red Dog” and also directed hit “Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.”
400 Days in jail for just doing your job in television journalism (and stints in solitary)

Peter is literally a television survivor.”
B. What was he accused of?
i. Giving support to the Muslum Brotherhood (at most this would have been a standard purchase of photographs for TV reports at the going rate. Bear in mind the Brotherhood had been in power only the year before, and was the political opposition at the time1)
ii. Lying (Peter literally recorded everything and asked unsuccessfully for them to point out anything he had recorded that was untrue)
iii. Broadcasting false news

”Peter saw his trial and conviction as an extreme example of the way journalism was being \ attacked in the War on Terror globally, and wrote about his experience in The First Casualty, He joined the University of Queensland as UNESCO Chair in Journalism and Communication in 2018 where he continues to campaign for the freedom of journalists.”

(LINK to Trailer for The Correspondent)

Australia does not have an explicit freedom of speech nor of press freedom in any constitutional or statutory declaration of rights.
“Journalists who hold power to account are increasingly making enemies of the powerful. From surveillance and coercion to physical violence and online abuse, the methods of extinguishing unwanted truth-telling have evolved. And lately, a new weapon has been added to this arsenal of tools: the law.” – World Economic Forum
This event will sell out fast due to the high interest in Peter and his story..

For late “unable to attend” the RATS committee have the ability to action a refund of the full transaction amount from the time the booking was taken provided the committee is advised of the cancel at least 1 day before the bookings cutoff date.

Get your bookings done early as the limit is 130.. it’s promising to be a great day. bookings close midnight Sunday the 31st of August.

Sad news from Walter Williams …

Today the world lost one of its true gentlemen, my mate Michael Beatty at 76.
We go way back to the Troglodytes and I’ve been so privileged to call him a friend.
Our media careers crossed paths many times usually with me actually interviewing one of the best and most prolific journalists on the planet.
For years I have been encouraging him to write a book about his amazing life.
He would hate the word journey that’s overused by reality TV stars.
Michael was a real TV star following in his father’s famous footsteps, but not as an actor, as a journalist whose passion for his work shone through.
When his current affairs yeas ended he turned his hand to being the face and voice of the RSPCA fighting the good fight.
Our Henry wouldn’t have lived another ten years if the RSPCA team didn’t pull off a miracle.
I attended his retirement party at the Paddo, it was a big night surrounded by friends and colleagues.
We regularly bumped into each other at funerals for our friends and shared a pint to say our farewells.
So, he sent me a rough draft of his book as a pdf and it blew me away, written in his own voice.
Finally it was printed and has since been reprinted because it’s a damn good page turner.
I only wished he’d narrated the audiobook or let me have a crack at it.
Grab a copy of “Off The Beatty Track”.
He loved intelligent wordplay.
It’s the most honest read of his amazing life and it was just the tip of the iceberg.
Michael’s zest for life was warmly welcomed at our regular Radio, Television and Advertising Survivors lunches.
He was a true Superstar, but so humble in every way.
He always looked out for me at these RATS get togethers.
To his wife Cecile and his son Liam I send big love and hugs and prayers for your extended family and friends.
Michael was such a regular at my mate John Scott’s restaurant, “Oh Boy! Bok Choy” they’ll probably reserve a seat in his honour.
During my last chat with my buddy he said Leukaemia had its grip and his doctor told him to give up the ci******es, which he did…for Va**ng!
Then the government made that illegal, but he found a loophole.
Michael was also fond of a tipple, a wee dram or some wine, which might explain why he was so well preserved and a stylish, class act into his 70’s.
I’m gonna miss this man more than he knows.
Cherish every moment with your mates.
Vale Michael Beatty an extraordinary individual.

RATS Lunch Wednesday 4th June 2025

Calling all RATS.

RATS Lunch 12 Noon Wednesday 4th June 2025

Came around quick this time. This is a reminder that the June lunch bookings are now open. I reckon this particular lunch will draw a full house.

It is the 100th Anniversary of Radio broadcasting in Queensland, and Tom Mayze the man responsible for hours of research from the beginnings of commercial Radio in Toowoomba in 1925, has dug up some great info, press ads, and photos of the day. He will via a PowerPoint preso talk about the history of Radio in Queensland.

From the time of the first experimental commercial Radio broadcast in the very early 1900’s, we have relied on that faceless voice coming through the radio speaker to provide us with entertainment and news of the day.

It is with pleasure we announce our next speaker who is recognized as having one of the longest radio careers, the rather extraordinary Mr John Knox.

"Think laterally and show your passion", so says veteran radio personality and living legend David Greenwood, a man despite his high-profile career was always humble about his winning track record including his time as GM of 4GR. We look forward to David’s insights into an industry he helped pioneer.

Our final guest (Save us Jesus) was a huge success on breakfast radio because he made us laugh and laugh with his silly songs and funny gotcha calls. Waynee Poo Roberts is a Brisbane radio institution who lives on forever. So, a fitting conclusion to the day will be a poo Q&A from the audience. So have a question ready.

Finally, I have to announce a price rise for our lunches. There has been pressure from the Cricket club, we did manage to negotiate our first 18 months at the venue at a cheaper rate. Unfortunately, however cost of living and prices overall have caught up to us. Despite this we have still been able to negotiate a discount on what the cricket board says is their base price for events such as ours which is $75 pp.

Our new adjusted price for a drop menu lunch will be $55. We are sorry but it is out of our control. We have researched other venues to no avail as prices have gone up significantly.

For those members who are on a tight budget there is an option. On the Try Booking site at the checkout you can pay in 4 payments over a 6-week period using “Pay Pal’s pay in 4”. Bookings can be made right up to the cutoff date. No signups, no late fees, interest free automatic payment.

For late “unable to attend” the RATS committee have the ability to action a refund of the full transaction amount from the time the booking was taken provided the committee is advised of the cancel at least 1 day before the bookings cutoff date. More info can be found using the link below.
