Our resident sewers at Anam Cara have got into the Christmas spirit nice and early this year.

They have been busy creating Christmas decorations that will bring joy to all. In the spirit of the season, funds raised from the sale of these items go back into the Anam Cara social fund, ensuring everyone has a joyful festive season🎄

A little bit of creativity has led to rock solid support at headspace Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

The team painted rocks featuring positive images and encouraging messages that were offered to attendees at a careers expo where they had a stall. Each rock included a QR code on the back, linking directly to the headspace referral form. The idea was to create a simple, engaging way for young people to access support when they needed it.

This simple idea formed a solid connection point with young people and initiated important conversations about mental health support, with one young person getting in touch weeks later to say she had used the rock to put her friend in touch with the service for support.

Congratulations to our latest cohort of school-based trainees, who have graduated with a Certificate III in Individual Support. 🎓

Over the past 12 months, these dedicated trainees have gained skills working in our aged care communities, giving a welcome boost to the workforce and exposing young people to what a career in health could look like.

This significant milestone marks the beginning of their careers as qualified care workers, equipped with the skills, knowledge, and experience to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

We couldn't let our aged care residents miss out on the fun of the Ekka so we brought it to them!

Residents at Chermside took a trip down memory lane as they enjoyed classic Ekka favourites like Knock 'Ems, the Human Slot Machine, and Lucky Duck, fairy floss, dagwood dogs, and of course, the iconic strawberry ice creams. 🍓🍦

Adding to the excitement, adorable baby animals brought plenty of smiles, laughter, and heartwarming moments. 🐑🐇🐥

Its these kind of moments that spark cherished memories and heartfelt conversations. Residents shared stories of taking their children to the EKKA for the very first time or stories of their children taking the grandchildren for the first time!

These moments of joy and connection are treasured by staff and residents alike and show the true spirit of the Ekka.

For Ruairi Lakes, a single question changed the course of his career.

“If you died, what would you regret?”

After reflecting on that question, however, the answer became clear.

"I realised I'd regret not helping the people around me when I had the chance," he says.

Now working as a support facilitator with the Way Back Support Service in Rocklea, Ruairi (pictured with his team) works alongside people following a suicidal crisis, providing practical support, counselling and helping them reconnect with the services and supports they need as they move towards recovery.

His role is about walking alongside people at their own pace and helping them build the confidence to take the next step.

Looking back, he's grateful he listened to the question that first challenged him to rethink his future. And so are we. 💚

What do you get when you hold a morning tea for the 100+ Club? A room full of smiles, memories and good advice!

Two of our St Mark’s aged care community residents Mavis and June were thrilled to be guests at the Lord Mayor’s 100+ Club morning tea last week.

The 100+ Club has been going since 1993 when Brisbane resident George Cartwright expressed a simple wish to talk to people his own age. Supported by a volunteer, a casual morning tea was set up and since then the Club has grown, even the Queen Mother had membership! Because everyone loves a cuppa and a chat, no matter what age you are. 🥰

A safe place to live is just the beginning.

We recently caught up with some of the young people who formerly called Logan Youth Foyer home. It was heartwarming to hear that the support they received helped them build independence, learn life skills, secure employment, complete education, and create brighter futures. Many described the Foyer as a stepping stone from instability to adulthood.

"When I came to Logan Youth Foyer I had no direction in my life, after leaving I felt like I had become a better person."
