(1)

Pegasus is an iconic Canberra charity which exists to empower people to develop their abilities. Established in 1973, Pegasus is located at Pegasus Farm on the outskirts of Canberra, the national capital. Around 80 people each week with a disability participate in our horse-facilitated therapy programs. Pegasus would not survive without the support it receives from the community and more than 250

volunteers. Our sessions are offered in an integrated environment with participants placed according to their ability. Apart from being fun, horse riding helps to improve co-ordination, balance, muscle development and fitness. It also boosts confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, leadership and trust.

Meet John Riley, our Interim CEO and long time coach at Pegasus.

John has been associated with Pegasus since starting his volunteering journey in 2005. He has been a volunteer coach, member of the Pegasus Board, mentor to many and is now having a refreshed view of the organisation through the CEO lens.
Retired from a lengthy career in a complex and demanding business environment, Pegasus is lucky to have a wealth of experience in his leadership role. He has a good understanding of all business disciplines… operations, sales & marketing, information technology and finance, and specialised mostly in the area of project management and new business implementation.

John is currently one of our Level 1 Riding Coaches With his broad involvement across Pegasus’ operations, he is very well versed in the requirements for delivering a safe, engaging, ability enhancing and fun service offering for our participants. Through this deep understanding of Pegasus’ service offering and delivery, combined with his extensive business experience, John aims to support the organisation in optimal decision making and governance in the best interests of the entire Pegasus’ community.

You can hear John speaking about all things Pegasus tomorrow on 2XX Behind The Lines from 10am, Friday, 12 June, with our Pegasus friends Zina Richardson and Scotty Foster.

ā€œHannah loves Pegasus - it is something she looks forward to all week. In this class she needed all her focus and calm energy to keep the egg on the spoon while walking over the poles! Her time with this mare, Flicka, lights up her day and we are very grateful that kids with disabilities get a chance to shine and share their passion for hoses through Pegasusā€.

Thanks to Kate, Hannah's mum for sharing this special endorsement of our programs.
Your support for our organisation is so appreciated.

Weekend horse feeder / horse carer.

Pegasus RDA (Riding for People with Disability) has a 100 acre farm in west Belconnen, with a herd of around 18 horses. Our horses and their well-being are vital to the delivery of safe and developmental programs to our participants who live with disability.
We are looking for someone on a casual employment basis, to permanently fill a two hour feeding shift late Saturday afternoons, plus, effectively be on permanent call to fill any of the other three weekend shifts (Saturday morning, Sunday morning and afternoon) as required when other feeder / carers may be unavailable.

This is not expected to be a frequent occurrence, but the applicant must have the capacity and flexibility to commit to the on-call arrangement, noting that on-call will only be paid if actually called in.

The role involves:

• Moving horses between paddocks and yards
• Feeding individual horses prepared, specific feeds and placing hay out for the herd
• Giving medication – oral, eyes, topical and possibly injectable
• Performing visual checks on all horses for apparent overall wellness
• Performing visual checks on all horses for surface injury
• Rugging and unrugging
• Mixing feeds for the following day
• Mucking out of yards
• Checking all water troughs are working, gates are secure, etc.
• Applying knowledge to determine if the herd manager should be called in, in the event of apparent horse illness
The applicant must possess the following skills:
• Substantial experience in handling horses
• A good understanding of horse behaviour
• A good understanding of herd dynamics
• A good ability to safely manage the logistics of separating horses and planning safe feeding sequences
• Skills in identifying an unwell horse and surface injuries
• Confidence in applying minor first aid to horses

If you are interested in applying for the position, please email a one page expression of interest detailing your abilities and experience relevant to the listed skills, and expressly describe your ability to accommodate the on-call aspect of the role.
