Getting into safe accommodation is an important first step for families leaving domestic violence. But settling into a new space can be difficult when you have left everything behind!

We helped a mum of 3 who had left everything behind. The simple act of having clothing and linen delivered to then that was ready to wear and the right size for her children meant her and her babies could focus on what mattered most, feeling safe and getting settled.

Their case worker told us: “The client and her children were extremely grateful. Having everything delivered to our service made it especially easy for me when I was working hard to get her settled. My client and I are so grateful for the support.”

Sometimes the things that help families move forward are simple: clean clothes, fresh linen and knowing someone cares about you enough to donate their items and prepare a beautiful gift for your child.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Bungendore Country Women’s Association (CWA) and members of the community, 1850 crocheted granny squares have been donated to Roundabout Canberra to be transformed into handmade blankets for children and families across our region.

The squares were created as part of the Bungendore CWA’s annual Granny Square Challenge, held in celebration of International Granny Square Day. The challenge brings people together to crochet as many squares as possible, with this year’s creations generously donated to Roundabout Canberra.

A group of contributors also gathered in the ABC Radio Canberra Green Room in the lead up to celebrate the initiative and the wonderful community behind it.

Our volunteers will now stitch the squares together to create beautiful single bed blankets. With around 48 granny squares needed for each blanket, this generous donation will become approximately 38 handmade blankets.

So far this year we’ve provided almost 500 single bedding packs to children, and quality blankets are one of the items we never seem to have enough of. These handmade blankets will help ensure more children have a warm, comfortable bed to sleep in.

A very big thank you to the Bungendore CWA for once again bringing this initiative to life, and to every person who contributed a granny square.

Items can be dropped off at our space at 80 Beaurepaire Cres, Holt during the following times:
Mondays: 10am – 1pm
Tuesdays: closed
Wednesdays: 10am – 1pm
Thursdays: 10am – 1pm
Fridays: 10am – 1pm
Saturdays: 1pm – 4pm.

Don't forget our south side friends Club Kalina (2/167 Soward Way, Tuggeranong) will accept clothes, bedding and toiletries during their opening hours: Monday - Friday 9am – 5pm

- Less than 15 years old
- Purchased in Australia

It takes a community to fill a school backpack.

To include a lunchbox, drink bottle, stationery, pencil case and all the other little things that help a child arrive at school ready to learn.

This year we've already provided more than 900 school backpacks to local children.
Every one has been packed thanks to the generosity of our community.

Some donations have been huge. Thousands of backpacks from Costco, hundreds of stationery items collected through workplace drives, and support from schools, businesses and grant funders.

Others have come from individuals and families who have filled shopping trolleys with school supplies, searched for discounted lunchboxes and drink bottles, or added an extra packet of textas to their weekly shop.

Every one of those donations has become part of a school backpack for a local child.
For a child, a school backpack is about more than the items inside. It's arriving at school carrying a high-quality backpack, filled with the essentials they need; sitting down at lunchtime with a lunchbox like their classmates; having coloured pencils of their own.

Right now, demand has meant many of the items that go inside our school backpacks have run out, or soon will. Lunchboxes and lunch bags are our biggest need, along with drink bottles and new stationery.

If you have any of these items to donate, we'd love to hear from you. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps ensure another local child starts the school day with dignity.

Thank you to every person, family, school, workplace and business that has helped fill a school backpack over the years. Together, you've helped thousands of local children start school with the essentials they need.

This doll arrived looking a little worse for wear, and with nothing to wear! After some special attention, she has had a full makeover, including freshly cleaned hair and new braids. She now also has beautiful handmade clothes and her own cosy blanket.

She is ready to be gifted to a child and become part of many new stories and adventures. At Roundabout Canberra, gifting a pre-loved item is about much more than simply passing it on. We make sure every item is clean, complete and prepared with care, so the child receiving it is given something that feels truly special.

A doll can offer comfort and companionship, encourage imaginative play and give a child something of their own to love and treasure. Not every meaningful gift needs to be brand new. Sometimes a little time, creativity and care are all it takes to give something a wonderful new life.

One of our tricks for restoring tangled doll hair is a carefully handled boiling-water dip, some fabric softener to help soften and detangle it, followed by another boiling-water dip! Voila, beautiful soft hair to brush and style.

When a family arrives in Australia as a refugee, there is often so much to navigate. Finding safe car seats for the children shouldn’t be another thing to worry about! We recently heard from a support worker who ordered essential items for a newly arrived family rebuilding their lives without an established support network in Canberra. The items they received helped ease the financial pressure and meant their children could travel safely. Just as importantly, the family felt supported during a time of enormous change.

Their support worker shared that the family was grateful not only for the items, but for the dignity and care shown to them. We believe every family deserves support free of judgement and always with dignity, and it is our pleasure to play a part in this family's settlement in Canberra.

"We put in an order for a newly arrived family who had fled conflict and was rebuilding their life in Australia without an established support network. The family received essential children’s items, including car seats that enabled the children to travel safely. This assistance relieved significant financial pressure and helped the family feel safer, more settled and supported. The client was extremely grateful for the quality and range of items received and for the dignity and care shown to her and her children."

Before a delivery reaches one of social service partners, it looks like this. Trolleys filled with carefully packed orders. A detailed run sheet. Every item organised so the right support reaches the right service and ultimately, the right family.

Elinor is pictured preparing this regional run before volunteer drivers Kyle and John set off to deliver the 13 orders! We have the process down to a fine art and can use every piece of space in the van and have learnt the hard way to ensure that each item is precisely labelled.

Behind every delivery is our team making sure children beyond Canberra can receive the practical essentials they need, without distance and a postcode becoming another barrier for support.

It is much more than a van full of things. It is clothing, toiletries, carseats and other essentials heading to children who need to feel safe, warm and included.
