A great piece of Queensland Rugby League and State of Origin history recognised this week.
Congratulations to legendary referee, Brisbane Rugby League Referees Association Life Member ( #45), Eddie Ward, who was inducted with Queensland Rugby League Life Membership, recognising more than 50 years of service to the game,
This is a rare honour as he becomes only the second match official to have been awarded QRL Life Membership.
Eddie was right in the middle of one of the greatest eras in Queensland rugby league. His incredible refereeing career included:
• 650 1st grade matches
• 402 Brisbane Rugby League games
• 248 NSWRL/ARL/NRL games
• 5 State of Origin matches
• 10 Test matches, including World Cup matches
• 8 BRL Grand Finals
• An ARL First Grade Grand Final
• At just 27 years old, became the youngest referee to control an Australia v New Zealand Test
For Queensland fans, his State of Origin involvement places him in the history of the contest that transformed rugby league in this state. He officiated during an era featuring some of the biggest names and fiercest Queensland v NSW battles in the game’s history.
But Eddie’s contribution to Queensland didn’t finish when he put the whistle away. He spent many years with the Queensland Rugby League developing the next generation of referees, including leading the QRL Referees’ Academy and High Performance Unit and helping officials progress through Queensland’s pathways towards the NRL.
From the great days of the Brisbane Rugby League, through State of Origin and Test football, to developing Queensland’s future officials, Eddie Ward has made an enormous contribution to the game.
Congratulations Eddie, a very deserving Queensland Rugby League Life Member. 🏉👏
