This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re imagining a gentler future for children facing some of the most challenging cancers to treat.

A future where there are more treatment options than exist today.

Diffuse midline glioma is an aggressive childhood brain cancer for which no effective treatments exist.

At Children’s Cancer Institute, Dr Holly Holliday is working to understand the biology that enables these tumours to grow and survive - and to uncover new ways to target it.

With early support from the CanToo community, Holly has investigated biological processes that could open new treatment avenues. Her research has produced promising laboratory findings, and further preclinical work continues to assess where those discoveries might lead.

It’s careful, step-by-step research, and there is still a long way to go.

But when treatment options are so limited, every promising new avenue matters.

It’s one example of what a gentler future could look like - a future shaped not only by making treatment easier to endure, but also by creating possibilities where too few exist today.

A gentler future: new treatment options.

A huge achievement from a long-standing member of the CanToo community 🧡

Grant Campbell has successfully completed a solo swim across the English Channel - an extraordinary physical and mental challenge, and another remarkable chapter in his swimming journey.

This isn’t Grant’s first Channel crossing. In 2019, he completed the swim as part of an English Channel relay team alongside fellow CanToo-ers. Since then, he has remained an active part of the CanToo community, taking on challenges, supporting our cause and raising significant funds along the way.

This time, the challenge carried a very personal purpose.

Grant dedicated his solo Channel swim to his wife and to raising funds and awareness for Huntington’s disease - bringing together an extraordinary personal challenge with a cause that means so much to him and his family.

At CanToo, we know that a physical challenge can become something much bigger than the distance travelled. Grant’s journey is a powerful example of how the courage to take on something difficult can also create connection, raise awareness and make a difference for others.

Congratulations, Grant, on an incredible achievement, and thank you for the many years you have been part of the CanToo community.

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re envisioning a gentler future for children and young people undergoing treatment.

A future where treatment could be tailored to the biology of each tumour.

For young people with sarcoma, treatment can be intensive – involving chemotherapy, radiotherapy and, in some cases, major surgery.

Associate Professor Emmy Fleuren, a CanToo alum researcher, and collaborators are working towards a more personalised approach.

Their research is helping uncover biological signals in sarcomas that may explain why some tumours are vulnerable to targeted drugs - and which patients could benefit.

It’s a shift away from a one-size-fits-all approach towards a deeper understanding of each tumour and the identification of treatment opportunities within its biology.

There is still more research to be done. But each discovery brings the possibility of more precise, personalised treatment closer.

It’s one example of what a gentler future could look like and of the research the CanToo community helps enable.

A gentler future: more personalised treatment.

What could you achieve with the right support around you? 🌊🏊‍♀️

Coach Suzie’s first ocean swim event was just 1km. She was finishing a year of active cancer treatment, had “zero swim fitness”, didn’t know how to pace herself, and even had water safety volunteers offering to rescue her.

Fast forward to 2026, and Suzie took on a 20km ocean swim around Keppel Island as a CanToo Beyond Challenge, raising an incredible $4,600 for CanToo 🧡

You don't have to start at 20km. You don't have to wait for the perfect moment. You just have to start.

Join our Summer Ocean Swim program, running from w/c 2 November 2026 - 7 February 2027, and discover what you're capable of with the support of our experienced Coaches, SLSCs and incredible community.

Secure our early bird offer today!
✨ $225 | 1km-2.5km program
✨ $275 | 5km program
