Drug ARM's vision is for flourishing people and communities living free from the harms of alcohol and other drugs. We provide a range of support services throughout Queensland and in northern NSW. We also deliver training and advocacy. In 2024, Drug ARM celebrates 175 years of service to community.

DRUG ARM'S VERY OWN LOCAL HERO

We are incredibly proud of Isobelle Fawkes, who was named a Westfield Helensvale Local Hero finalist and awarded a $5,000 grant for Drug ARM yesterday.

While this recognition is a wonderful achievement, what makes us most proud is why Isobelle was nominated in the first place.

Isobelle was nominated not only for the work she does, but for who she is. Every day, she shows up for people with compassion, respect, no judgement and a genuine commitment to helping others.

Isobelle is currently completing clinical placement with our Community and Family Support Service (CAFSS) program and has built meaningful connections with the individuals, families and communities she works alongside. She helps people feel heard, valued and empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

We are incredibly grateful that Isobelle chose Drug ARM as the recipient of this grant, a gesture that reflects her belief in the importance of supporting people, families and communities experiencing challenges related to alcohol, other drugs and mental health.

But even more than that we are even more grateful that she chooses to share her skills, dedication and heart with our organisation and community every day.

A win for evidence-based prevention 🎉

The OurFutures school prevention program has just reached over 300,000 students across Australia with their new va**ng program.

What's particularly encouraging is that the program isn't just raising awareness. Researchers found the OurFutures Va**ng Program reduced the likelihood of va**ng by 65% after one year.

It's a timely reminder that effective prevention is about more than telling young people what not to do. It's about building the skills and confidence to make informed decisions when it matters most.

Because when it comes to prevention, the approaches that make the biggest difference are often the ones backed by evidence.

When the stakes are high, so are the risks.

Each finals season, rates of both domestic and non-domestic violence increase.

For many Australians, celebrating the footy finals goes hand in hand with alcohol. While violence is never caused by alcohol alone, alcohol can increase risk by impairing judgement, lowering inhibitions and increasing the likelihood of aggressive behavior and violence.

Our latest video explores the relationship between alcohol and violence, and how small actions, like looking after your mates, planning ahead, and knowing when to step in, can make a big difference.

Have you noticed people wearing red shoes lately? đź‘ 

There's a reason for it.

September marked International FASD Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). FASD is caused by alcohol exposure before birth and is estimated to affect approximately 1 in every 28 people.

Despite its prevalence, awareness of FASD remains low in Australia. This can lead to missed diagnoses, delayed support, and increased stigma for individuals and families living with FASD.

That's why people wear red shoes.

Wearing red shoes is a simple but meaningful way to spark conversations and raise awareness about FASD. Greater understanding can lead to earlier support, reduced stigma, and better outcomes for people living with FASD and their families.

Sometimes, something as small as a pair of red shoes can be the start of an important conversation.
