Yesterday our Bundy-based crew was tasked to a forest northwest of Hervey Bay following a motorcycle crash. Our rescue crew officer, critical care doctor and QAS flight paramedic were winched down to reach a woman in her 20s.

Our team treated the patient for a leg injury before being winched back into the helicopter and flown to Hervey Bay Hospital for further care.

Future retrieval doctors in the making 🩺

We recently welcomed a group of Griffith University medical students to our Brisbane base for a behind‑the‑scenes look at LifeFlight in action 🚁

From hopping inside the helicopter and jet, to running through medical simulations, the group got a real feel for what it takes to deliver critical care in the air.

A big thanks to Dr Brad Richardson for guiding the session and sharing his experience on the front line!

We love being able to provide hands‑on experience and inspire the next generation of retrieval doctors, because today’s students are tomorrow’s life‑savers 🙌

Today our Mount Isa-based crew airlifted an 18-year-old man to hospital after he was bitten by a snake.

Our helicopter landed on a private property in the Shire of Burketown, 300km north of Mount Isa on the edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The man's family had driven him to a Royal Flying Doctor Service - Queensland Section clinic after a snake bit his lower leg.

He had visible signs of a snake bite and was treated by an RFDS doctor before LifeFlight arrived.

The patient was airlifted to our Mount Isa base and road transported by QAS paramedics to Mount Isa Hospital.

When Ava’s horse threw her into a steel fence at a campdraft, she ended up with catastrophic internal injuries. She was in intense pain and hundreds of kilometres from specialist care.

“The pain was indescribable,” Ava said. “I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I thought I was going to die.”

First responders quickly recognised Ava needed more specialised care and called for the LifeFlight helicopter.

From there, our aeromedical team took over.

LifeFlight Critical Care Doctor Aaron Quay and the began a rapid assessment, using advanced monitoring and ultrasound to identify the extent of Ava’s internal injuries.

They delivered critical care in-flight, managing her pain and stabilising her condition while making urgent decisions about where she needed to go.

“We went into the top-to-toe assessment,” Doctor Quay said. “The belly was really so suggestive of a surgical catastrophe going on in there, and we gave her a lot of pain relief, almost emptying the bags of medicines for her.”

With life-threatening injuries including an aortic tear and severe abdominal trauma, Doctor Quay knew Ava needed the highest level of specialist care.

“Without LifeFlight, Ava might have died,” he said.

Ava was flown to Queensland Children’s Hospital, where she spent 10 days in intensive care. She’s still recovering.

Ava and her family recently returned to the LifeFlight Bundaberg base to thank the team who helped save her.

“Meeting the crew today was amazing,” Ava said. “It was so amazing to say thank you for everything they’ve done for me.”

Stories like Ava’s are a powerful reminder of the difference aeromedical care makes when every minute counts.

A big mission for our Bundy-based crew yesterday 🚁🛥️

Our team spent 13 hours completing a complex offshore rescue after a fisherman broke his leg on a trawler about 110 nautical miles off the Rockhampton coast.

With rough sea conditions, the crew had to carry out a winch onto the moving deck, where our rescue crew officer and QAS flight paramedic assessed and stabilised the patient. Getting him back to the helicopter wasn’t possible in those conditions, so the crew adapted. They landed on Heron Island, where the patient was transferred by boat to meet them.

Pilot Alex Dorr said it was the most challenging rescue of his career.

"It's one of those jobs that you go 'wow'", he said.

"After 15-20 years in the game, it was absolutely a standout. They were very challenging conditions and challenging to get the crew on the back of the boat."

After nearly 950 kilometres of flying and multiple refuels, the man was brought back to our Bundaberg base and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

An incredible effort from everyone involved 💙
