Keen to understand how your food is grown?
Sovereign Foods gives the definitions relevant to all our delicious Chewsday food in this blog post:
- Organic
- Biodynamic
- Chemical-free
- Spray-free & Insecticide free
- Conventional Farming

The terms given to the various farming practices and standards used to grow our food can be confusing. Some of the terms we commonly refer to are clearly defined, while others are not. You have probably heard us talk about 'conventional', 'organic', 'biodynamic', 'chemical free' and 'insecticide free' produce, but what exactly does it all mean?

We wrote a new blog post this week to provide clarity and help you to make informed choices about your food. To find the writings on our site (we're just getting started!) head to the 'words' menu and you'll see the topic categories from there. We've also updated these definitions on our FAQ's page if youโ€™re ever browsing there.

We hope you find this helpful, and don't forget that we have filters on our shop page to help you select the preferences that are most important to you. You can filter products by Growing Method, Producer, Category, Product Type and Availability - itโ€™s pretty cool!

Have a great weekend everyone, it looks like weโ€™re in for some nice weather here in Brisbane. We look forward to seeing some of you at Northey Street Organic Farmers Market on Sunday ๐ŸŒป

Hands up if youโ€™re ready for another year of amazing organic food from ethically sourced farmers and producers! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ

If youโ€™re looking for a SIGN to join us at the Chewsday Food Collective - this is it! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿ“

We have a rare few spots available in our group of families, couples and singles who are local to the Annerley area (where weโ€™re based). ๐Ÿก

Thereโ€™s nothing like starting the year off on the BEST foot possible by investing in your familyโ€™s health and the planet (and community!) by sourcing delicious organic food at wholesale prices. ๐Ÿ’ต

A reminder for you that a food co-op, collective, or buyers club can meet many different types of needs, but at its most basic, we're a group of people who pool our collective buying power and energies to purchase good, locally sourced, organic/spray-free food at affordable prices. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ

And the price discounts are pretty staggering - on average 40% less than retail organic prices, and sometimes as much as 85%! ๐Ÿ˜…

We can achieve these significant cost reductions, and make organic food more accessible, by pooling our collective buying power to buy in bulk at wholesale rates, and by dividing the labour and cost of distribution through the contribution of our own time and energy. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

There are so many benefits to being a member of a local food co-op - if you're interested in joining us at Chewsday Food Collective, message us using the button below and we'll get all of the information to you asap! ๐Ÿ˜

Are you keen to learn about Bulk Buyer clubs in the Fair Food system? Or considering setting up your own?

We'll be joining Food Connect Foundation at their shed in a couple of weeks' time, for an afternoon of discussion and knowledge sharing!

All details are below, we hope to see you there!

Bulk buyers clubs - groups of family, friends or neighbours pooling their buying power to access wholesale prices - are a small but mighty movement with the potential to take on or heal many of the big challenges we face as a community: cost of living, food security, social isolation, environment, the list goes on.

In a few weeks time we're holding a community info session, drawing on our collective knowledge to give you everything you need to start your own bulk buyers club.

You'll hear from Rob and Costa Georgiadis Official on food communities, get tips from a panel of our friends who are part of existing groups, like Chewsday Food Collective and Food Buyers Club Loganholme, get your hands on our new Bulk Buyer Guide handbook, and have the chance to chat to potential suppliers like The Mini Farm Project and Salisbury Mill.

We'll have snacks out and the bar open - come and meet your people.

๐Ÿ‹ It's Tuesday evening and we're packing up orders for our fellow Chewsday Food Collective members! Our produce is looking amazing today.

We've had an awesome influx of new members join us recently, which is fantastic! So welcome in, if this is you!

We love this infographic from one of our fair food suppliers, Food Connect Brisbane!

There are so many benefits to being a member of a local food co-op - saving money on organic/spray-free produce, supporting our local growers, and being a member of the fair food movement are just a few of those benefits!

๐ŸŽ What's the time commitment as a member of a Food Cooperative like Chewsday? ๐Ÿฅฆ

And what's the payoff - for you, fellow members, for farmers, and for the fair food system?

We require each member to commit 1-2 hours a month by joining one of our two packing groups, with the expectation that once you're settled in and have been with the co-op for a while (after about 3 months), you take on an additional job - across anything from communications to stock through to finance.

What's the value of your time?

Whilst putting a monetary measurement is not the only - nor always the best - way to evaluate things, it can be helpful for some and in some situations!

A member who puts in an average ($110) order every fortnight, will save almost $150 a month compared to the averaged organic alternatives, and $90 of their box spend goes directly to farmers each month - supporting a fair food system and one that keeps the planet in mind when farming.

Considering this from the perspective of a target time commitment of 2-3 hours per month on average, for every hour, you are saving $50, and putting about $30 into a farmer's pocket!

There are so many benefits to being a member of a local food co-op - saving money on organic/spray-free produce, supporting our local growers, and being a member of the fair food movement are just a few of those benefits!
