The Nest Community is a Brisbane-based charity that connects women purposefully through craft.

We operate a community Textile Recovery Centre that reclaims precious textile resources that we resell through our social enterprise, The Nest Haberdashery. Our vision: to foster intergenerational connections by creating a resilient community of women and nurturing them through the process of sustainable living. The Nest Community is a Charity funded through social enterprise initiatives. The Nest's Haberdashery Thrift Shop is stocked with reclaimed materials and pre-loved equipment and our Community Workshop Program provides the opportunity to learn new skills in a welcoming environment run by our knowledgeable and passionate volunteer tutors. Located in our beautiful Everton Park home, we celebrate the social and wellbeing benefits of making by hand, sharing skills, and empowering through creation. Since opening the doors of our community home seven years ago, we have touched the lives of over 10,000 women, delivered over 800 workshops, and saved 120km of fabric from landfill.

We're hiring Junior Casuals for the Christmas school holidays! 🧵💛 Gain valuable work experience in customer service, retail and textile resource recovery, working alongside our experienced volunteers. All training provided!

As a women’s charity, The Nest is passionate about building pathways for young women to connect with our work. We have a limited number of paid Junior Casual positions available at The Nest Haberdashery this Christmas!

📍 Who: Young women aged 15–17
📅 When: Mid-December to the end of January
🕒 Shifts: 1–2 per week, generally 3–4 hours

Our CEO Roz Holt will be speaking at Moreton Bay Eco Fest this Saturday! 💚

At The Nest, we believe sustainability is about more than keeping textiles out of landfill. It's about recognising the value in resources we already have, sharing skills and making reuse accessible to everyone. Every week, our community of volunteers helps us recover thousands of litres of donated textiles, giving these resources a second life while creating meaningful social and environmental impact.

Roz will be sharing insights from The Nest's community-led approach to textile recovery and how we're demonstrating that caring for people and the planet can go hand in hand.

We're delighted to be part of this free community event, alongside others working towards a more sustainable future. Come along, hear from some inspiring speakers and discover practical ways to make a difference!

Meet Storm, an 11-year-old maker who had a vision for her very own vampire costume and was determined to bring it to life! Using reclaimed fabrics and supplies from The Nest Haberdashery, Storm created her costume for just $20, including black cotton poplin for her cloak, white Chantilly lace, red lace, a headband and flowers.

This project was a long time in the making, and Storm even made her cloak large enough to wear as an adult so she can treasure it for years to come!

We love seeing young makers develop their sewing skills, get creative and discover just how much is possible on a pocket money budget. A Halloween costume worth keeping forever! 🧛‍♀️🖤

Congratulations to the 12 schools selected to receive a 2026 Stitch Together Secondary School Voucher! 🧵💛

A big thank you to Community Bank Samford for making this initiative possible, and to every school that took the time to apply. We were so encouraged by the wonderful work happening in classrooms across Brisbane and Moreton Bay.

Each successful school will receive a $250 voucher to spend at The Nest Haberdashery, providing students with access to high-quality reclaimed sewing and textile resources. At our affordable prices, that's equivalent to around $750 worth of materials at regular retail prices!

Through Stitch Together, we're helping make textile education more accessible, giving the next generation opportunities to develop practical sewing skills, explore their creativity and discover the value of reuse.

Meet Sherman! 🧵💚

One of our wonderfully creative Nest customers, Sherman loves fashion hunting, sewing and inventing his own unique clothing styles!

Sherman only started sewing two years ago, and it’s his very first creative pursuit. Since then, he’s discovered the joy of bringing fabrics together in fun and unexpected ways, often using materials you might never think to turn into clothing!

Just take a look at his incredible skirt featuring an upcycled umbrella! ☂️✨

Sherman says inventing interesting styles of clothing makes him very happy, and we love seeing what he creates with fabric found at The Nest Haberdashery.

Always a bright and friendly face in store, Sherman reminds us that creativity can begin at any age, and there's so much joy in giving materials a new life.

A lovely way to spend a Saturday, learning, sharing skills and giving well-loved textiles a new lease on life! 🪡💛

Thank you to the wonderful team at The Embroiderers' Guild Qld for sharing their knowledge and expertise at our recent Visible Mending workshop.

Participants explored how simple embroidery techniques can be used to creatively repair and extend the life of textiles, turning everyday mending into something beautiful.

It's always an honour to work with an esteemed craft organisation like the Guild and give back by helping them to raise funds running a skill-sharing session. Our vision for this style of partnership is to make skills accessible and reuse achievable, supported by our own affordable, recirculated resources.

Stay tuned for more to come in 2027.
