The Nest Community The Nest Community is a Brisbane-based charity that connects women purposefully through craft.

We operate a community Textile Recovery Centre that reclaims precious textile resources that we resell through our social enterprise, The Nest Haberdashery. Our vision: to foster intergenerational connections by creating a resilient community of women and nurturing them through the process of sustainable living. The Nest Community is a Charity funded through social enterprise initiatives. The Nest

's Haberdashery Thrift Shop is stocked with reclaimed materials and pre-loved equipment and our Community Workshop Program provides the opportunity to learn new skills in a welcoming environment run by our knowledgeable and passionate volunteer tutors. Located in our beautiful Everton Park home, we celebrate the social and wellbeing benefits of making by hand, sharing skills, and empowering through creation. Since opening the doors of our community home seven years ago, we have touched the lives of over 10,000 women, delivered over 800 workshops, and saved 120km of fabric from landfill.

We gotta darn lotta yarn! 🐑 🧶

Yesterday we received a massive donation of all manner of yarn, and then another arrived today!

Our Nest volunteers have been busy sorting and packaging the stock, and it's already on the shop floor, ready for our weekend crafters!

🧶 From $1 per ball - with bulk bags available.

We are so grateful to our donors. A friend delivered the first yarn donation because the donor unfortunately had to move into care. It's not her first donation, and we are so very grateful for her support.

We're also not surprised that a second donation arrived. It's almost like there's a hive mind. Brisbane's beautiful Maker Community know when a destash is happening, and similar donations always seem to follow.

Thank you for sharing your resources with us. Funds raised support all our community programs.

"It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing" 🎼 🎶

Minka created this stunning Great Gatsby-themed outfit for a Drama subject at school.

It was her first time making a dress, using an overlocker and working with stretch, so there was lots of problem-solving along the way. But the end result was well worth it. 💚

Everything was sourced from The Nest Haberdashery:
👗 dress pattern
🪡 sewing machine and overlocker
🧵 thread, elastic, lining

Apart from the all-important fringe that was sourced from Fringemakers NZ - an amazing small business that makes custom fringe on a vintage machine- the whole endeavour was 💯 recirculated textile resources.

What do you do when you buy an old bank building in a small rural town in New Zealand that has loads of space and 3mtr high ceilings?

Kerry made the most of our current Tapestry Takeover promotion and snapped up 51 tapestries to adorn her new home. Plus, there's a future dream taking place for 'La Tapestry', a little café filled with art, character, stories and plenty of good coffee!

Along with the multitude of tapestries, Kerry is also taking several pieces of Australian art with her as little reminders of home in her new chapter.

We wish her luck with her new life adventure and would love to see progress reports as the tapestries find space on the new walls!

Tapestry Takeover continues until this Saturday 5 September.

Thanks for coming to The Nest Haberdashery

Today we hosted the Year 9 Creative Textiles students who are currently doing a sustainability unit. Seeing our Nest volunteers at work in the Textile Recovery Centre and then browsing our aisles to source materials is the perfect real-life learning experience.

The Nest is committed to fostering hand-making skills in younger generations and values the work being done by Home Economics teachers keeping skills alive! To support their work, we offer school excursions, teacher shopping appointments and will soon be releasing our second round of Secondary School Vouchers.

If your school would like to enquire about an excursion, submit an enquiry today:

There are loads of colours to choose from, and this beautiful wool is good for so much more than tapestry. Take it home for weaving, crochet, felting or whatever your next creative idea calls for. 💛

Thank you, Julie, Ministry of Handmade, for sharing your skills at The Nest last Saturday!

Perfectly timed to coincide with our Vintage Stall in September, Julie's session offered tips, tricks and inspiration for transforming old table linens into stunning lampshades.

Julie embraced our skill-sharing collaboration initiative and generously offered to run the session to raise funds for our Exchange Project mentoring program.

Stay tuned for more skill-sharing demonstrations coming soon.

Forget finishing the tapestry. What could you make from it instead? 🪡✨

The Nest Haberdashery receives plenty of beautiful canvases that have been started, forgotten or never finished. But we think they deserve another chance. ✨

That’s what Tapestry Takeover is all about: looking at these preloved canvases with fresh eyes and imagining what else they could become. Find one that sparks an idea and get creating!

Our Sustainable Fashion Futures initiative continues in 2026, thanks to the support of Community Bank Samford.

The Nest started working with young designers in 2024 when we awarded $4500 in resource vouchers to QUT 2nd-year Fashion students to support their Pop-Up Shop project.

In 2025, we successfully applied for a major grant with Community Bank Samford, and we subsequently awarded $17000 worth of resource vouchers to 2nd and 3rd-year QUT Fashion students as part of a Sustainable Fashion Futures initiative.

Community Bank Samford's continued support this year has allowed us to support 59 3rd-year QUT Fashion students, each receiving a $200 voucher for their graduation showcase.

In total, since 2024, we’ve given $33,300 worth of resource vouchers. This gives students access to high-quality recirculated materials normally worth over $100,000 if bought in a regular retail outlet.

These vouchers provide enormous financial relief to students during the cost-of-living crisis. But students also benefit from the diversity and breadth of our donated stock, which allows them to extend their design choices.

Stay tuned for the 2026 Graduate Runway later to see what they create.
