We operate a community Textile Recovery Centre that reclaims precious textile resources that we resell through our social enterprise, The Nest Haberdashery. Our vision: to foster intergenerational connections by creating a resilient community of women and nurturing them through the process of sustainable living. The Nest Community is a Charity funded through social enterprise initiatives. The Nest

's Haberdashery Thrift Shop is stocked with reclaimed materials and pre-loved equipment and our Community Workshop Program provides the opportunity to learn new skills in a welcoming environment run by our knowledgeable and passionate volunteer tutors. Located in our beautiful Everton Park home, we celebrate the social and wellbeing benefits of making by hand, sharing skills, and empowering through creation. Since opening the doors of our community home seven years ago, we have touched the lives of over 10,000 women, delivered over 800 workshops, and saved 120km of fabric from landfill.

📌 Pin this as a quick reference to our donation guide.

Our social enterprise, The Nest Haberdashery, is fully stocked by donation.

Funds raised support our operations and community programs such as the Exchange Project, mentoring high school students through craft.

We welcome smaller donations during our normal trading hours and prefer to receive donations in the morning.

If you have a larger donation, bulk fabric, a large individual collection or large equipment, please contact us first so that we can arrange a time and assist you further.

When your donations arrive, we will transfer them into our own sorting tubs so that we can maximise our limited space in the Textile Recovery Centre. Any bags, plastic tubs or carriers will be returned to the donor.

Sometimes The Nest Haberdashery is like the Room of Requirements 🔮✨

made these stunning ice skating competition costumes for two different clients.

"The pink fabric was just a coincidence as the skater had requested light dusty pink prior, and then I happened upon the pink base fabric at The Nest".

"My other client absolutely loved the gold stretch lace I found, so I made the dress design around the fabric, with the empire waist illusion and scattered gold rhinestones".

Because The Nest Haberdashery is stocked by donation, the diversity and quality of the stock is limitless - you simply never know what you'll find. In both cases, Johana was able to source a lot of the base materials for just $15 each costume.

It just goes to show that with a keen eye, skill and creativity, circular design can flourish [and it doesn't have to break the bank].

From community-built to world-leading. If you're new here, this is our journey 💫

The Nest Community was started in 2014 by our CEO and Founder, Roz Holt, with a simple mission to connect women purposefully through craft. As a self-funded community group, we ran craft workshops and stalls as our main source of revenue.

It didn't take long before people started donating textile resources to us, and eventually, we started selling them from the verandah of our Everton Park home.

By 2019, we had made the bold decision to set up a 'permanent' haberdashery underneath the house, and, with the support of local businesses and community groups, we pulled it off.

It only had three walls, but it was ours.

The Nest Haberdashery served the Maker Community, even through the COVID pandemic and gave us financial security to launch our first free community program, the Exchange Project.

Thanks to the haberdashery, we finally had financial security and could dream BIG.
To expand our operations, we committed to a commercial lease at The Sheds in Brendale and relocated in 2023.

That's The Nest Haberdashery as you know it today.

In the three years since then, demand for our community-led recirculation services has more than tripled, and we've expanded our programs. Last year, we won regional awards for Not-For-Profit and Sustainability excellence.

We've grown, but craft and connection is still at the heart of what we do.

The eco-system that we've built is unique, and many people just don't 'get it'.
What do women and craft have to do with the circular economy or fighting textile waste?

The fact is that we're leading the way globally, and we haven't lost the heart of what we do. That's because, as author Margaret J. Wheatley says:

"There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about."

Thanks for connecting with us 💚

We are helping to change mindsets, but we build connections so that change feels communal.

Our affordable, reclaimed resources change what’s possible in classrooms, studios, and homes. Beyond rescuing textiles and restoring their value, we are reconnecting people with making, repairing and reusing—core concepts of circularity.

Each week, The Nest welcomes more than 650 people as donors, customers, volunteers and participants. Volunteers contribute close to 380 hours per week, saving materials while strengthening skills, confidence and connection.

As the saying goes, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.

We couldn’t agree more. This impact has been built through collective action, and when it’s done with heart, it’s an unstoppable force.

Congratulations Christine! Five years as a Nest volunteer! 👯🧵🫶

Christine first joined us in The Nest Haberdashery in Everton Park and brought her care, kindness and practical know-how to our community.

Over the years, she has generously shared her time and talents in so many ways, from helping in The Nest Haberdashery to supporting stalls.

From its earliest days, Christine has been involved in our flagship program, the Exchange Project, where she has mentored numerous students, sharing her hand-making skills.

She even stepped up as an Exchange Project Leader for a time.

Her contribution has helped shape a program that reflects so much of what The Nest is about: connection, purpose, creativity and community.

Coinciding with National Volunteer Week, we'd like to thank you, Christine, for five wonderful years of loyalty, dedication and generous volunteering.

We are so grateful for everything you bring to The Nest.

Our first and favourite program 💗

Since 2021, Nest volunteers have been mentoring high school girls through our free program, the Exchange Project. It's founded on intergenerational connection and skill-sharing and was the first program we ever launched.

We've now worked with five schools and more than 200 students!

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, we chatted to current students from Craigslea State High School and asked them how our volunteers had made a difference to their lives.

Their words reflect the care, creativity and encouragement volunteers give weekly.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for helping nurture the next generation of Makers, for giving unconditionally and with boundless patience.

To each of our incredible Nest volunteers, thank you for your time, energy and support. Your impact reaches further than you may realise, and our community is stronger because of you. 💗🫶
