Save the date 🌷 To celebrate the change of seasons, we’re kicking off spring at our social enterprise Closeburn Country Garden with a Spring Saturday on September 12!

Come along for a fun morning featuring a special thrifting pop-up raising funds for Nexus Care, cute kids’ activities, delicious Fonzie Abbott coffee by Bloom And Bean and a good old sausage sizzle.

Plus, of course, plenty of spring goodies to take home for your garden! Bring the family, grab a coffee, have a browse and help us welcome spring 🌼

We couldn't be prouder of our Fresh Start Food Program Coordinator, Suki O'Dea 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

She took out the runner up prize for Coles' Community Food Relief Champion Awards, winning $1000 which will be put to good use, purchasing fresh produce for our food parcels!

With one in three Australian households experiencing food insecurity, Coles is running an appeal until September 1 to help feed people in need. If you’d like to chip in, you can make a donation at the checkout with all funds raised supporting Foodbank Australia and SecondBite.

Congratulations Suki, we’re so grateful for all you do for our community 💙

For many of us, brand-new clothes are something we take for granted. But for someone facing some of life’s toughest challenges, it can restore dignity and hope, reminding them they are valued and supported. 

After a difficult time that has left Aaron living in his car, these warm, quality clothes from our incredible partner Thread Together are more than just new items. They’re a reminder that fresh starts are possible.

Over the past five months, we’ve been walking alongside Aaron, supporting him through our Fresh Start Food Program, Emergency Financial Relief and Career Coaching Services. We’ve seen his confidence and hope grow as he works towards employment and stable housing.

And there’s more good news…Aaron has taken the exciting step of starting his own cleaning service. We’re so proud to journey alongside him and look forward to seeing what his fresh start brings 🫶🏻

Normally known as one of Australia’s leading interior fitout companies, WOODLAND FITOUTS took on a different kind of fitout this week…stocking the pantry of our Fresh Start Kitchen with an incredible donation of non-perishable food.

Based in Brendale, their team of 46 staff came together to run a workplace food drive, helping us tackle food insecurity across North Brisbane, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

These long-life pantry staples are already making a difference, being packed into food parcels for households in hardship.

Thank you WOODLAND FITOUTS for your generosity and for helping us ensure no one in our community goes without 💙

From veggie patch to food parcel 🥬🥕🍅

The spring harvest is right around the corner at Closeburn Country Garden and we can’t wait to pack the freshest produce into our Nexus Care food parcels to help those in hardship put healthy, nutritious food on the table.

A huge shout out goes to Morris and our team of volunteers who are out there every week taking care of the patch, as well as the Year 7 students at Genesis Christian College Brisbane who planted seedlings for us in May.

Together, we’re growing more than fresh produce, we’re growing hope for our community 🫶🏻

It’s emails like this 🥹

Yesuda had been out of work for four months when we met him.

Since then our team have been on a mission to help him find meaningful employment through our Career Coaching Services.

A new CV, some strategic job hunting and four weeks later, he landed a job with a local business providing funeral catering to comfort people in their darkest moments.

We’re so happy for you Yesuda 💙

It really does take a village to help people in our community who are doing it tough.

A huge thank you to the Rotary Club of Brisbane Airport for their generous $1,000 donation last month. Thanks to their support, we'll be able to provide 33 food parcels...that's the equivalent of more than 2,000 meals for local people experiencing food insecurity.

It was also fantastic to have our Fresh Start Food Program Coordinator, Suki, visit the club and share a little about the difference this program is making in our community.

If you've ever thought about getting involved with a group that's passionate about giving back, check out the Rotary Club of Brisbane Airport! They do amazing work for our local community and beyond, and they're always keen to welcome new members 💙

Bon voyage to two of the very best 🫶🏻

After four months volunteering in our Fresh Start kitchen during her gap year, Cara is heading to China to continue her journey as a Mechatronics Engineer.

We're also celebrating Gary Dalton, who officially retired this month after countless years on the road with SecondBite ensuring rescued food didn't go to waste.

Wishing both Cara and Gary all the very best for the adventures ahead💙

Our Workplace English Classes are back for Term 3, and we kicked things off with one of our biggest classes of the year!

Twenty-four guests joined us for today's session, where participants learned about sequencing. We also took a moment to celebrate some special birthdays, including our Career Coaching Services Coordinator, Tim Bean, our incredible volunteer chef, Molly, and two of our wonderful students, Monica and Wulan.

Our Workplace English Classes are designed to help participants build the confidence and communication skills needed to become job-ready. Through practical activities, our guests practise spoken and written English for job applications, interviews, and navigating an Australian workplace.

Held fortnightly, our classes are fun, free, and open to people of all English levels.

Our next class will be held on Thursday, 30 July at our Everton Park hub. We'd love to see you there!

This one goes out to Jessica and the amazing team at Coles Everton Park 💙

Earlier this year, SecondBite connected Nexus Care with our local Coles store, so we could collect surplus, nutritious food, from fresh fruit and vegetables to meat and pantry staples to pop in our food parcels.

We're so grateful for their generosity and ongoing support. Together, we're helping ensure more vulnerable families have access to healthy, nourishing food when they need it most 🫶🏻
