The results are in! 📚

During the 2025–26 school year, Reading Assist Fellows provided high-quality literacy tutoring to 1,557 students across 70 schools in four states. And when the school year ended, our work continued, reaching another 622 students through summer programming.

From foundational reading skills to oral reading fluency, our latest results highlight the progress students can make with individualized, evidence-based literacy support.

Thank you to every school and community partner, tutor, student, and supporter who made this year possible.

Here’s a secret: Literacy Month is actually every month!

As Delaware closed out Literacy Month this week, Governor Matt Meyer shared that message with students at Eisenberg Elementary, one of the schools we serve, reminding us that the work of helping children become successful readers doesn’t end when September does.

Reading Assist CEO Caroline O’Neal was glad to join Governor Meyer, Secretary of Education Cindy Marten, and literacy partners from across the state for the Literacy Month proclamation and the launch of a new pilot program that will allow students to use their school IDs as library cards, making reading resources easier to access.

At Reading Assist, expanding access to literacy is at the heart of our work. By providing intensive, evidence-based literacy instruction to students who need additional support, we’re working to ensure more children have an equitable opportunity to learn to read.

We’re proud to join partners across Delaware in keeping literacy at the forefront, not just during Literacy Month, but every month.

Yesterday, members of Reading Assist’s Program team joined educators and literacy leaders from across Washington, DC, for the 2026 OSSE DC Literacy Convening: From Insights to Impact: Advancing Literacy Together.

Throughout the day, Jeannine and Leigh explored topics closely connected to our work, from strengthening phonemic awareness in early learners to building vocabulary and meaning-making through structured literacy.

We’re grateful for opportunities to learn alongside others committed to advancing evidence-based literacy instruction and to bring new ideas back to our work with young readers. Thank you to the Office of the State Superintendent of Education for bringing DC’s literacy community together!

What do fundraising and philanthropy require now? Today our development team joined fundraising professionals from across the region at Leading Philanthropy 2026 to find out.

The day offered a chance to dig into some of the questions shaping the field right now, with sessions on collaborative grantmaking, employer matching, the changing landscape of charitable giving, and so much more.

We also loved catching up with familiar faces and meeting new ones along the way. We’re heading back to Reading Assist with plenty to think about and a few ideas we’re excited to explore.

Thank you to Foundation for Delaware County and the AFP chapters that brought Leading Philanthropy together and created space for our region’s fundraising community to learn from one another!

There’s a new place to celebrate literacy in Wilmington! 📚🎶

Yesterday, Reading Assist's Recruitment Manager Tinesha joined Mr. Billy the Librarian and community members at NoMa Library for Hip Hop Storytime, bringing books, music, and plenty of energy together for young readers.

NoMa, Wilmington’s newest library opened last month with spaces dedicated to literacy and learning, arts and culture, technology, wellness, and more.

Whether we’re connecting with families at a community center, celebrating reading with a neighborhood bookstore, or joining the fun at our newest local library, we love seeing new spaces to celebrate the joy of reading and we love even more showing up in the communities we serve.

Welcome to the neighborhood, NoMa! We’re excited to see all the ways this new space brings Wilmington together!

Happy Friday! For this week’s Fellow Feature, we’re highlighting our DC Fellows, who officially wrapped up training this week and are ready to begin their year of service!

Our DC Fellows are entering classrooms at an exciting time for literacy in the District. Recent results showed ELA proficiency reaching its highest level since 2015, marking a fourth consecutive year of academic gains.

As our Fellows begin working with young readers, we’re excited for them to build on that momentum alongside DC schools and educators, providing the high-impact tutoring students need to continue growing as readers.

Thank you to our DC Fellows for choosing to serve with Reading Assist. We can’t wait to see the impact you and your students make this year!

For the second year in a row, Reading Assist and the City's Department of Parks and Recreation have offered a 9-week summer tutoring program to children at the William "Hicks" Anderson Community Center. In both years that the program has run, more than 80% of students have showed measured growth in their reading skills!

Helping our kids become stronger readers is one of the most important things we can do to help set them up for a lifetime of success. Thank you to all those who make this program possible. 📖

On this National Day of Service and Remembrance, Reading Assist Fellows joined AmeriCorps members and volunteers across the country in honoring those we lost by uniting through service.

Throughout the communities we support, our Fellows spent the day giving back, from volunteering at food banks to helping care for parks and public spaces to sorting donated clothing.

Together, through our collective acts, we remember and carry forward the spirit of solidarity that lifted our nation in the days after 9/11, 25 years ago.

Lindsay brings design thinking, event strategy, and community storytelling to her work at Reading Assist, strengthening our connections with the communities we serve and raising our visibility across the region.

Her nomination reflects what we see every day through her work as our development and marketing manager: that thoughtful, creative engagement can be just as powerful a tool for literacy as any curriculum. We're proud to have her on our team.
