The ACLU of Delaware, established in 1961, is the state affiliate of the national ACLU. Through education, litigation, and community outreach we work to preserve and strengthen the individual rights and liberties of every person in Delaware. We are a first resort when the government threatens our rights in Delaware and a last hope when we are deprived of our liberties.

💡 What happens when the conditions of probation make it harder to successfully rebuild your life?

⛓️ For people returning to their communities after incarceration, housing instability, transportation barriers, employment challenges, health care needs, and family responsibilities can collide with rigid probation conditions, turning everyday challenges into technical violations that can lead back to prison, even when no new crime has been committed.

Our latest blog looks at how Delaware’s probation system intersects with social determinants of health, and how a more person-first approach could help people successfully rebuild their lives instead of creating more barriers to reentry.

We hear the question “What king?” a lot.

No Kings is a reminder of one of the most foundational ideas of the United States: no one, even the President, is above the constitution or law of the land.

Our democracy hinges on checks and balances, an independent judiciary, Congress as a check on executive power, and a government that follows the laws that govern it. 🗽

When presidential power expands beyond those limits, when court rulings are repeatedly challenged or ignored, Congress is sidelined, and constitutional rights are treated as optional, we have a responsibility to speak up.

On October 17, we’ll be in the streets with communities across the country to defend the principle that in America, power belongs to the people, not to a king.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is more than a day of recognition. It means confronting the ongoing harm of colonization and respecting Indigenous nations’ sovereignty, knowledge, and right to determine their own futures.

Our office is closed today in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Indigenous history is not confined to the past. Indigenous peoples are here, sustaining their cultures, protecting their lands, and fighting for their futures.

National Coming Out Day celebrates the courage it can take to live openly as LGBTQ+ people.

Every person who gets to be themselves without fear helps make a world where others can do the same. But coming out isn't safe or possible for everyone. No one should have to choose between being themselves and feeling safe, and no one owes the world their story.

At ACLU-DE, we're working toward a world where LGBTQ+ people can live openly, love who they love, and be themselves without fear of discrimination or harm.

That work matters every day, not just on October 11.

We see you. We stand with you. And we keep fighting for you. 🏳️‍🌈
