Poison Ivy gets a bad reputation, but the forest would miss it. While Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) may cause rashes in humans, it's a valuable resource for wildlife. Insects gather nectar from its spring flowers, mammals browse on its leaves and stems, and birds eat its berries in cold months when other food is scarce. The poison ivy pictured here is actually a model, created for the museum by Dixon Studios. During our renovation, our team sent samples of plants, soil, and sand to Dixon so that they could create the most accurate model possible. When this was being installed, no one wanted to touch it because it looks so real!

Today is the anniversary of TWO official state symbols.
Adopted on June 10, 1999, the Tiger Swallowtail ( Pterourus glaucus ) is indigenous to Delaware and can be seen in deciduous woods, along streams, rivers, and wooded swamps, and in towns and cities throughout Delaware. Three butterflies were chosen by students of the Richardson Park Learning Center as possible state butterflies; then 1,611 out of 3,175 public and parochial students across Delaware voted to recommend to the General Assembly that the Tiger Swallowtail be named the state’s butterfly.

Adopted June 10, 2010, the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) is indigenous to Delaware. It is a swift and powerful animal and the only member of the Canidae family that can climb trees. Fourth-grade students at Joseph M. McVey Elementary School, as part of teacher Paul Sedacca's persuasive writing lessons, suggested that the gray fox be designated as Delaware's official state wildlife animal. Since it does not hibernate, the students said that it is "always ready like our soldiers at Dover Air Force Base."
