It is with profound gratitude and heavy hearts that we honor the life and legacy of Mr. Gerret Copeland, a man whose generosity, vision, and compassion forever changed the lives of animals and the people who love them.

Mr. Copeland lived a life rooted in curiosity, service, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. Whether through his dedication to preserving nature, supporting the arts, or fostering community, he believed in making the world more beautiful, more humane, and more connected. That same spirit guided his love for animals, a powerful passion that found expression through his generous support of Humane Animal Partners.

Mr. Copeland and his beloved wife, Tatiana, have supported animals in need for what feels like a lifetime, serving as Honorary Board members at HAP. From sustaining daily operations to ensuring no animal was left behind, their passion is evident in all of their efforts. As the needs within our community grew, Mr. and Mrs. Copeland met them with unwavering compassion and remarkable generosity, exemplifying what it means to lead with both heart and purpose. Their support helped shape the future of our organization, most notably through the creation of the Tatiana and Gerret Copeland Animal Care Center, a living testament to their belief that every animal deserves safety, care, and, most importantly, a chance. More than just a building, it has become a place of hope, healing, and second chances, where over 15,000 animals have found loving homes and brighter futures.

Mr. Copeland’s kindness and commitment to animals extended far beyond shelter animals, as it was deeply personal as well. In 2017, the Copelands established Reggie’s Fund in memory of their beloved dog, Reggie, honoring not only his life but the belief that pets are family, and that no one should have to say goodbye too soon. Through this fund, families facing financial hardship can access critical, lifesaving veterinary care, ensuring they never have to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender or say goodbye to their beloved pet. Since its founding, Reggie’s Fund has helped save the lives of more than 1,000 animals in our community. Each life saved, each family kept whole, reflects Mr. Copeland’s enduring compassion and the love he carried for animals.

To Tatiana and the entire Copeland family,
Gerret's love, leadership, and compassion have left an unforgettable mark on Humane Animal Partners and the animals we serve. Gerret’s legacy will live on in every life saved, every second chance given, and every moment of love shared between people and their pets. We take comfort in knowing Gerret is reunited with his beloved Reggie, and the many dogs he cherished throughout his life, together again, a reflection of the deep bonds he so treasured. We will carry his legacy forward with gratitude, purpose, and the same compassion he so generously showed to all.

We are deeply honored that the Copeland family has chosen Humane Animal Partners as a recipient of memorial donations, furthering Mr. Copeland’s impact for many years to come.

BABY BEAR🧸🐾💗 This we are reintroducing one of our longest residents, Bear!

Bear is a 7-year-old Yorkie boy hoping for a fresh start! He came to HAP when his owners were no longer able to care for him, and sadly, he arrived in rough shape. Bear was suffering from severe dermatitis, eye and ear infections, and significant obesity. While he is now on a healthier diet and his skin is slowly but surely clearing up, his eyes were damaged beyond repair, and he required the enucleation of both eyes. Now, Bear is navigating the world with fresh eyes, just not in the way he once did. Each day brings progress, as he’s steadily figuring out his surroundings, bumping into fewer things as his confidence grows!

Despite all he’s been through, Bear’s loving spirit shines through when he is with friends. He would thrive with adopters who understand that Bear now navigates the world with his nose, and occasionally his mouth. When startled, Bear can be a bit snippy, so a patient, calm home environment would be best. Once he’s learned your voice and scent, Bear is much more relaxed, as he knows he is safe with you. Thankfully, Bear loves being talked to, sweetly tilting his head to let you know he’s invested in your stories and wants the tea. He loves treats, enrichment games, and afternoon strolls. Recently, he even enjoyed bath time outside! While belly rubs aren’t really his style, he’ll gladly relax beside you and soak in some soft, reassuring pets. Bear is brave, loving, and doing his best to adjust. With patience, kindness, and a calm environment, he’ll continue to blossom into the wonderful companion he’s meant to be!

⭐️Bear is available at HAP Wilmington! If interested in adopting, visit humaneanimalpartners.org/adopt or stop in to meet him!

DOGGY DAY OUT PUPDATE🐕💙 We would like to give a huge thank you to our friends at the Petfinder Foundation for awarding Humane Animal Partners the 2026 Dog Field Trips Grant!

Thanks to these essential funds, we’re able to purchase the supplies that make our Doggy Day Out program safer, more effective, and accessible to even more pups. Items like seatbelts, easy-walk harnesses, and durable leashes help keep our dogs safe and secure on their adventures, while “Adopt Me” gear helps them shine when meeting potential adopters out in the community! Thanks to their generous support, we’ve also been able to expand our supply inventory, giving even more dogs the chance to participate in Doggy Day Out!

Doggy Day Out is one of our most impactful programs, offering short-term field trips where volunteers can take shelter dogs on real-world adventures, such as hikes, walks, car rides, lunch dates, and more. These outings help reduce kennel stress, burn off energy, and give dogs valuable exposure beyond the shelter environment. For dogs like Monte, this program is truly life-changing!

Monte came to HAP after his beloved owner unexpectedly passed away. The transition from a home to a shelter has been incredibly confusing for him. In his kennel, Monte can seem overwhelmed, barking or growling through the door as he tries to cope with his new reality. But outside? That’s where the real Monte shines!

On Doggy Day Out trips, Monte transforms into the dog we always knew was there, a loving, silly, and incredibly well-mannered pup. He enjoys car rides, loves splashing in the water, and thrives while exploring local parks with his human friends! These stress-free days give him the chance to just be a dog again, and they give us the chance to truly understand him.

This grant doesn’t just fund supplies, it creates opportunities for dogs like Monte to feel safe, to be seen, and to show the world who they really are. Thank you to the Petfinder Foundation for making these moments possible! 💜👏

THEY NEED YOUR HELP‼️❤️ Within the last two weeks, five precious babies in our care have needed emergency, lifesaving treatment. Here at HAP, we do everything we can to ensure our animals have what they need to thrive, but sometimes that care adds up quickly, leaving us with a significant financial burden. Today, we’d like to share the story of three of our German Shepherd puppies.

In April, we rescued Sarah and her six puppies from a shelter in Georgia, where they were scheduled for euthanasia due to lack of space. Her babies were only four weeks old, and we knew we could give them the safety, love, and comfort they deserved. When they arrived, Sarah and her pups were underweight and battling a severe intestinal parasite infection. To protect them from common shelter illnesses, her vulnerable puppies were placed immediately into foster care. At first, everything was going well, until it wasn’t.

About two weeks ago, three of the puppies became critically ill and were hospitalized with diarrhea, loss of appetite, fevers, and an overall failure to thrive. Creamsicle, Mila, and Kylo required emergency plasma transfusions, IV fluids, and multiple medications. Our team provided around-the-clock care, including syringe feedings and constant adjustments to their treatment plans to give them the best chance at recovery. Creamsicle, the smallest of the litter, needed the most intensive care and was transferred to BluePearl Animal Hospital for more specialized treatment.

Despite our best efforts, their fragile little bodies were struggling, and we were faced with the devastating possibility of humane euthanasia to prevent any more pain. It was the kind of heartbreak no one is ever truly prepared for. But every time we looked in those sweet eyes, we saw something impossible to ignore - they were still fighting. Beneath the exhaustion and uncertainty, they had hope, so we fought beside them. Through round-the-clock care, emotional highs and lows, and days filled with uncertainty, these tiny puppies held on with a strength far bigger than themselves. And little by little, they started to improve.

What once felt hopeless slowly transformed into something extraordinary, a reminder of just how powerful resilience, love, and second chances can be. They started gaining weight, and slowly, their playful, energetic personalities began to shine through once again. Now, all three are back in loving foster homes, as they continue to grow big and strong!

While Creamsicle, Mila, and Kylo are now happy, healthy, and continuing to thrive, the cost of their care exceeded $6,000. We are incredibly grateful they were given a second chance, and we need your help to continue providing lifesaving care to animals who need us most.
