Innovia recently presented YWCA Spokane with a $15,000 Community Grant to support a Domestic Violence Crisis Advocate position, helping ensure survivors have access to safety planning, emotional support, education, and critical community resources.

For more than 123 years, YWCA Spokane has served our community with a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Today, the organization is our region's main provider of domestic violence services, serving 13,000-14,000 individuals each year through emergency shelter, advocacy, housing support, prevention education, and more.

The funded Crisis Advocate position provides individualized support through in-person, phone, and telehealth services, helping survivors make informed decisions, access resources, and move toward safety and stability.

This grant was made possible through Innovia’s 2026 Community Grants Program, funded by donors who have established flexible charitable funds to address critical needs and emerging opportunities across the Foundation's 20-county region. Find a full list of awardees at goinnovia.org/CGP-26.

Because of your generosity, 244 children who lost a home in Spokane wildfires are heading back to school with new clothes, shoes, and necessities. Earlier this month, support from Innovia's Spokane Complex Wildfire Response Fund, The Salvation Army Spokane, Old Navy, American Red Cross, and Wheatland Bank provided for a back-to-school shopping spree for Spokane children affected by the fires. Each student received a $200 Old Navy gift card and a $100 Foot Locker gift card.

As wildfire recovery continues across our region, families are facing unexpected challenges this back-to-school season. Thank you to our generous community for helping give impacted students a strong start to their school year. ❤️

In the wake of the devastating August 2026 Spokane Complex Fires, longtime Spokane developer and community leader Walt Worthy has established the Karen Worthy Memorial Community Fund at Innovia Foundation, in loving memory of his late wife, Karen Worthy.

The fund will provide support to the Spokane Region Long Term Recovery Group to launch the Karen Worthy Memorial Wildfire Grant program — a one-time, $10,000 grant available to eligible households whose primary residence was destroyed or rendered a total loss by the Old Trails, Autumn Lane, or Fairview Fires, collectively known as the Spokane Complex Fires.

The grants are designed to move quickly and without strings attached. Funds are intended to help affected households cover urgent, immediate needs — temporary housing, replacement of everyday essentials, and other recovery costs — while insurance claims, FEMA assistance, and other aid are still being processed. Grants are intended to address the loss of a primary residence, whether owner or renter occupied.

Innovia recently presented 208 Recovery with a $15,000 check to support mental health and substance use recovery.

208 Recovery opened its doors in 2025, serving Idaho's five northern counties. The organization provides peer-led recovery support to individuals struggling with addiction, with coaching performed by staff who have been through recovery themselves and maintained 2 years of sobriety. Anyone from the community can access 208 Recovery's Care Closet, stocked with Narcan, snacks, hygiene products, and medical lockboxes.

➡️Disaster Assistance Center: If you or someone you know is looking for help, the Disaster Assistance Center at Shadle Park High School has extended its hours through today and tomorrow to connect fire survivors with a variety of fire recovery services and resources, including city and county departments, nonprofit organizations, and other supports. American Red Cross is providing assistance to households whose homes were destroyed or substantially damaged by the fires. Visit the center in-person to connect with a Red Cross representative and complete the intake process. More information about registering with the Red Cross, including what documents to bring for intake, is available at: redcross.org/about-us/our-work/disaster-relief/wildfire-relief/spokane-and-stevens-county-washington-wildfires-financial-assistance.

➡️Community resources: A hub of resources for survivors, including food, shelter, medical care, financial help, and more from local organizations, is available at: spokanecommunityresources.org.

💗 Donate items: A donation center has been set up at the Northtown Mall in the old Sears building (4901 N. Lidgerwood St.). This donation center is accepting: hygiene supplies, non-perishable food items, paper plates, cups, towels, plastic silverware/silverware, toilet paper, dishes, mugs, glasses, pet food and gift cards. This donation center is not accepting: clothing, shoes, appliances, furniture, toys, cleaning supplies, or medications of any kind.

Donation drop-off is open daily between 8am - 11am. Those in need can pick-up items between 1pm – 8pm, daily.

DISASTER ASSISTANCE CENTER: More than 1,000 individuals impacted by the Spokane Complex Wildfire visited the Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) during its first two days of operation at Shadle Park High School.

Spokane County Emergency Management (SCEM) organizes DACs after disaster events, bringing resources and support from more than 50 agencies together in one place to assist impacted families.

“We have so many resources for you and so many people who we who want to help,” said SCEM program specialist Simone Ramel-McKay.

Holding the DAC — which continues 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through at least Sunday, Aug. 9 — at Shadle Park High School has allowed families to find support in a place that has been like a second home to Northwest Spokane residents for nearly 70 years.

“I think it's such an important role for the school district to play,” said SPS School Support Services executive director Becky Doughty. “We're really uniquely positioned space wise and staffing wise to be able to be a support for our families during this time.”

While parents and caregivers navigate DAC resources, guided by the Spokane Region Long Term Recovery Group, children ages 4 and older can drop-in at a free day camp from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. this weekend. SPS staff have kept kids busy with crafts, games, movies and other activities while their grown-ups navigate next steps.

“Whatever your need is, whatever you're struggling with. We know this is painful. We know this is hard. But please come,” Ramel-McKay offered to community members. “This is a tremendous collaboration with city and county resources. We're all in this to support the community, and we hope you will come and visit us.”

In response to the devastating wildfires currently affecting our community, Innovia Foundation has opened the Spokane Complex Wildfire Response Fund.

100% of donations will support nonprofit organizations working to meet the needs of those impacted by the fires. Innovia will work closely with community partners to get funding where it is most needed for both immediate and long-term needs.

"Our community is facing an incredibly difficult moment right now, with hundreds of families losing their homes and businesses to these fires," shares Innovia's CEO Shelly O'Quinn. "The Spokane Complex Wildfire Response Fund exists so we can move resources quickly to the nonprofits and organizations already on the ground helping people. We know from experience that recovery doesn't end when the fires are out — it takes sustained support over the months and even years ahead, and Innovia is committed to walking alongside our region for the long term."

Katherine M. developed a love for storytelling and literature early in life, with fond memories of hearing her grandfather's war stories, studying the works of Plato and Shakespeare, and even engaging in her own creative writing.

These experiences influenced who she is today—an aspiring educator who plans to teach English to the next generation. In 2025, Katherine received two scholarship awards from Innovia, empowering her to pursue her career goals at Franciscan Univeristy.

"I want to teach English not just to improve grammar and writing but to instill a lifelong appreciation for storytelling, logic, and persuasion—skills that shape minds and influence society."
