Costa Rica convicted 10 traffickers in 2025. The year before, it was 2.

Sentences ranged from 8 to 14 years. That’s real progress, and it’s worth celebrating.

But the same U.S. State Department report points to a gap. Victims outside the capital had to travel to San José just to be interviewed and officially recognized as victims. When someone has been through trafficking, that’s a long way to go to get help.

Laws and convictions matter. So does having people on the ground in the places the system doesn’t reach.

Convictions are a win. But there’s still work to be done, especially for survivors outside the big cities. Follow to see where help is needed and how you can get involved.

This is one of the hardest truths in child protection work: the person a child names as their abuser is rarely a stranger.

Kids have a small world. A coach, a family friend, a relative, someone from church or the team. When a child discloses, our first instinct is often disbelief, because believing means confronting someone we know and trusted with our own child.

That hesitation is the barrier. Not lack of evidence. Not lack of concern. Our own inability to believe what we're being told, because it's easier to doubt than to face what it means about someone close to us.

If a child tells you something, your job in that moment isn't to investigate or decide guilt. It's to believe them, stay calm, and get them to the right resources. Washington State Patrol's MECTF and your local ICAC task force exist for exactly this. Report it. Don't sit on it because the name is familiar.

Talk to your kids about who has access to them. Then talk to another parent about this post.

Meet MECTF.

The Washington State Patrol's Missing and Exploited Children Task Force is one of the most important child protection units operating right here in Washington State.

Here's what you need to know:

MECTF is a multi-agency task force made up of federal, state, and local law enforcement. Their mission: find and recover sexually exploited children and apprehend child predators before any harm is done.

Since their first operation in August 2015, MECTF has made nearly 400 arrests and removed numerous children from dangerous situations. Most recently, Operation Guardian in Snohomish County resulted in 21 arrests in a single week.

This is happening in our communities. In our state. In our neighborhoods.
To report suspected child exploitation, contact the WSP tip line or your local law enforcement. If a child is in immediate danger, call 911.
