Daybreak Star 1975 Groundbreaking Exhibit

Architects Jerry Arai and Cliff Jackson worked with designer Lawney Reyes to develop the original master plan for the Indian Cultural and Educational Center. In 1972 and 1973 they began meeting each week with the Urban Indian community of Puget Sound, they met in a design office located within the International District. Both the young and elderly attending were integral with the months of preplanning and programming that brought about the ‘Indian Cultural and Educational Center Master Plan’. Bernie White Bear and Lawney Reyes proposed that the name for the Art Center building be; ‘Daybreak Star’.

DREW MICHAEL Water's Edge, ‘Water is life. We come from water and Earth. In this show, I want to bring us to the water’s edge to appreciate and honor, the spirits of water, animals, and land. Yup’ik masks have been used for centuries to connect us to the spirits that live in the waters, animals, and lands around us. We rely on these animals to give themselves to us when we hunt, fish, or gather. As a person wears a mask they embody the spirit that is represented on that mask.' Drew Michael
