Friends of Discovery Park Information about Discovery Park events, news and history, updated continuously.

Our purposes are to defend the integrity of Discovery Park; to create and protect there an open space of quiet and tranquility, a sanctuary where the works of man are minimized, appearing to be affected primarily by the forces of nature, a place which emphasizes its natural environment, broad vistas and unspoiled shorelines; and to promote the development of the Park according to a Master Plan responsive to these goals.

☀️🌲 CELEBRATE THE SUMMER SOLSTICE AT DISCOVERY PARK! 🌲☀️

Celebrate the Summer Solstice by supporting Discovery Park at a habitat restoration work party in Capehart Forest on Sunday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Capehart Forest is one of the most wildlife-rich areas in Discovery Park. Volunteers will help increase biodiversity by removing invasive plants, spreading mulch to improve soil health and support beneficial fungi, and planting native shrubs and groundcovers.

There’s no better way to welcome summer than by giving back to Seattle’s largest park and helping restore habitat for wildlife. 🌿🦋🐦

What to bring:
💧 Water
🧤 Work gloves (optional)
🥾 Ankle-high work boots
👖 Long pants and long sleeves recommended
✂️ Optional: favorite hand trowel or clippers

Meet-up location:
The entrance to Capehart Forest on Discovery Park Boulevard near the street's only stop sign. The site is about a 10-minute walk from the north, east, or south parking lots.

"The gentle downhill ride along Discovery Park Boulevard, with Puget Sound stretching across the horizon, might offer one of the most unbeatable views in the city. End the ride at West Point Lighthouse and lounge among the driftwood by the beach while watching the sunset."

Thanks, The Seattle Times, for highlighting Discovery Park as one of the region's most scenic bike destinations. 🚲🌲🌊

Whether you're riding, walking, running, or simply taking in the view, Discovery Park offers some of Seattle's most spectacular connections to nature.

"“It’s not just about habitat restoration,” he said, “but protecting the habitat we do have.”

He pointed to Savannah Sparrows. Counts of the grassland species declined by nearly 75% throughout the city. Discovery Park, which is home to one of Seattle’s largest meadows, helps explain why that is.”

A new piece from KUOW Public Radio (NPR) features Birds Connect Seattle's Fewer and Fewer report, which documented a big drop in Savannah Sparrow counts at Discovery Park between 2005 and 2023. The report also found a 25% decline in total bird counts at the Park over the same period.

As Seattle's largest natural area, Discovery Park plays an important role in supporting birds and other wildlife. Let's continue to keep it wild.

Our June newsletter is out! 🌿☀️🦉

This month, we explore what it means to "Keep Discovery Park Wild" and why that vision remains as important today as it was when the Park first opened. We also highlight a local conservation success story involving great blue herons, share a reminder about protecting sensitive meadow habitat, look back on 50 years of rewilding at Discovery Park, and spotlight some of the plants and wildlife that call the Park home.

You'll also find volunteer opportunities, stewardship updates, and ways to get involved in helping protect Seattle's largest natural area for future generations.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY 5/31: Join Friends of Discovery Park for a habitat restoration work party in Capehart Forest on Sunday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 🌱🌲

Capehart Forest is one of the most wildlife-friendly areas in Discovery Park and has been the focus of years of restoration work. This month, volunteers will help protect newly planted native species by removing invasive plants such as bedstraw and grass that can outcompete young seedlings.

This hands-on work helps increase biodiversity and improve the long-term health of the forest while giving participants an up-close look at one of Discovery Park’s most successful restoration areas.

What to bring:
💧 Water
🧤 Work gloves (loaners available)
👖 Long pants and sturdy shoes
☀️ Sun protection as needed
🪴 Optional: kneeling pad, knee pads, or favorite weeding tools

Meet-up location:
The entrance to Capehart Forest on Discovery Park Boulevard near the street's only stop sign (about a 10-minute walk from the north, east, or south parking lots).

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY 5/26: Join Friends of Discovery Park for a South Meadow restoration and maintenance work party on Tuesday, May 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 🌱🌲

Restoration work doesn’t end after planting. Healthy meadows and forests require ongoing care and stewardship. Volunteers will help assess restoration sites throughout the South Meadow, including weeding, watering, and removing blackberry resprouts. This is also a great opportunity to see years of restoration work up close and learn more about how these landscapes recover over time.

What to bring:
💧 Water
🧤 Work gloves (loaners available)
👖🥾 Long pants and sturdy boots
🌦️ Dress for the weather

Meet-up location:
The large black cistern on the west end of the parade grounds (about a 10-minute walk from the south parking lot).
