Hear from all five City Commission candidates on historic preservation. Free forum, moderated by historian Jeff LaHurd. Sat, July 25, 1–2pm.

Sarasota City Commission Candidates Forum on Historic Preservation

Join the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation (SAHP) and the Historical Society of Sarasota County for a candidates forum focused on the future of historic preservation in our city.

All five City Commission candidates have confirmed they'll attend. This is a rare chance to hear directly from each of them, in one room, on the issues that shape how Sarasota protects its historic buildings, neighborhoods, and character as the city continues to grow.

The forum will be moderated by renowned local historian Jeff LaHurd, and held in a fitting setting — the historic Crocker Memorial Church (1901), itself a preservation success story.

Sea level rise, stormwater and hurricanes

An excerpt from Chris Reed and Harvard GSD's Climate Case: Subtropical Urbanism study in Sarasota.

By 2100, Sarasota could see up to 7 feet of sea level rise, flooding barrier islands, neighborhoods, roads, and parks. Rising seas, stronger hurricanes, and higher storm surges make the city especially vulnerable. According to NOAA, projections show 6–10 inches of rise by 2030, 1–2 feet by 2050, and 3–7 feet by 2100, with chronic flooding threatening homes, infrastructure, wetlands, and freshwater supplies. Without adaptation, Sarasota’s waterfront may become a stark warning of unchecked climate risk.

In 2024 and 2025, Architecture Sarasota hosted a two-part series: “Downtown Sarasota: Hindsight, Insight, and Foresight” and “Beyond Our Borders.” This public forum brought urban planners, thinkers, and designers together with residents to explore the future of Sarasota.

Andrés Duany, Founding Principal of DPZ CoDesign, the principal consultants responsible for the current downtown master plan (Downtown Sarasota 2020) offered an overview of downtown master planning that occurred between the late 1990s and 2000, along with the lessons his team learned along the way.

We are excited to share the findings from “Climate Case: Subtropical Urbanism,” a study and report by Chris Reed, Professor in Practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and his Spring 2025 seminar course, in collaboration with Architecture Sarasota. This work examines the intersection of urbanism and climate resilience—ranging from historical ecological precedents in Sarasota to global strategies for adaptation.

These findings and the students’ work are now public. We will be sharing the insights here, but you can also head to the link below for the full project recap and a link to the full report PDF on Issuu.
