We are excited to share the findings from “Climate Case: Subtropical Urbanism,” a study and report by Chris Reed, Professor in Practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and his Spring 2025 seminar course, in collaboration with Architecture Sarasota. This work examines the intersection of urbanism and climate resilience—ranging from historical ecological precedents in Sarasota to global strategies for adaptation.

These findings and the students’ work are now public. We will be sharing the insights here, but you can also head to the link below for the full project recap and a link to the full report PDF on Issuu.

Our “Modern Dwelling: Manufactured Housing Communities of Sarasota, Florida” study, which shares the findings of a year-long exploration into what researcher Allan Wallis describes as “the single most significant and unique housing innovation in twentieth-century America” is now available to the public. This study and publication are a collaboration of Architecture Sarasota and the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation.

In the fifty years since the National Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards Act of 1974 was signed into law, manufactured housing has stood at the intersection of innovation and neglect, an immense yet underutilized resource in addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the shortage of safe, dignified, and affordable housing. Despite its proven ability to provide millions of Americans with a pathway to homeownership, manufactured housing has often been dismissed, overlooked, and, worse still, stigmatized. Yet today, as the demand for affordable and sustainable housing intensifies across the United States and abroad, the imperative is clear: no viable form of dwelling should be excluded from the conversation.

Sarasota School: The Intersection of Architecture and Art explores how the designers of the Sarasota School transform modernism into a distinctly regional expression shaped by climate, landscape, light, and creativity. This talk examines the movement’s deep connections to contemporary art, design, and cultural experimentation, revealing how architects such as Victor Lundy and Carl Abbott blur the boundaries between building and sculpture, structure, and composition. Through iconic projects and collaborations with painters and sculptors, the presentation highlights Sarasota’s legacy as a place where architecture integrates functional environment and artistic expression.

Thank you to our table sponsors and all who attended the 5th Philip Hanson Hiss Award Celebration, honoring the World Monuments Fund for its global leadership in preserving modernist architecture.

This year’s recognition highlights 20 years of the World Monuments Fund’s Modernism Program, which began with its very first grant to the Sarasota Architectural Foundation to support efforts to save Paul Rudolph’s Riverview High School (1958), a landmark moment in the preservation of modern architecture.

We are also deeply grateful to The Ringling for graciously hosting this special celebration.

Together, we continue the important work of protecting the places that shape our cultural legacy.

A big week for Architecture Sarasota and the future of resilient design.

On Tuesday, Harvard Graduate School of Design Professor of Practice Chris Reed shared new ideas and design toolkits for reimagining Sarasota’s Bayfront through sustainability and coastal resilience. The report is now available on our website.

On Wednesday, we held our second “In Residence” at the Stuart Rae House. Now owned by Ted Scott, this Ralph Twitchell–designed Sarasota School home was badly flooded in the 2024 hurricanes. Through our Restoring a Sense of Place Disaster Recovery Program, the property became the first to receive an Emergency Determination of Eligibility for the National Register, enabling recovery and adaptation rather than demolition.

Our disaster response work and the recovery of the Stuart Rae House are featured in Sarasota Magazine:

In 2024 and 2025, Architecture Sarasota hosted a two-part series: "Downtown Sarasota: Hindsight, Insight, and Foresight" and "Beyond Our Borders." This public forum brought urban planners, thinkers, and designers together with residents to explore the future of Sarasota. The City Commission later cited the series as a "catalyst" in deciding to move forward with a new master plan.

The experts who participated identified the Bayfront as an area that deserved attention. In response, Architecture Sarasota partnered with Harvard University's Graduate School of Design to study the area and produce toolkits for reimagining the waterfront as a sustainable, resilient, and connected public space.
