⚡ Rain check on the scallops! ⚡

We geared up and headed out for the Great Scallop Search in North Sarasota Bay this morning, but the lightning just wouldn’t give us a break. Safety first, always.

Even so, our faithful volunteers showed up ready to dive in, just in case the skies cleared. That kind of dedication is what makes this community so special. 💙

A huge thank you to the Mar Vista for sponsoring the effort and keeping our volunteers well fed! We couldn’t do it without you.

And a special shoutout to Fisher, age 3, who was NOT about to let a little weather stop him. He insisted on scalloping right from shore! Now THAT’S the citizen scientist spirit. What a sport! 🐚

🚨 We need boats! We’ve got eager snorkelers ready to hit the water, but we just need more captains to get them out there. If you have a vessel and a few hours to give, your boat could make all the difference. Can you help?

BOATS FOUND — THANK YOU! 🐚

The call went out, and our community answered. A huge thank you to The Bay Explorers, Charlie Ball, Troy Brown, and Thomas Jackson for stepping up and getting our snorkelers out on the water for the Great Scallop Search 2026 in South Sarasota Bay.

Volunteers like you are the reason this bay keeps getting healthier. Every scallop counted helps us track the recovery of Sarasota Bay's seagrass and water quality, and it doesn't happen without folks willing to captain a boat and lend a hand.

See you on the water this Saturday, August 22, 8 AM–1 PM! 🌊

Grab your snorkel and help us survey scallops, sea life, and seagrass across South Sarasota Bay. Every fin kick helps us track the health of our bay! 🌊 Snorkelers, kayakers, boat captains, and crew all welcome, bring the whole family and stay for lunch on us.

With funding support from Coastal & Heartland National Estuary Partnership - CHNEP students become the teachers 🎓

Sarasota Bay Watch’s free Youth Leader Marine Camp puts learning in the hands of the next generation. Our high school and 8th-grade youth leaders design and teach hands-on, one-hour marine science sessions to 4th and 5th graders right after school. 🐠🦈🐢

From watersheds and coral reefs to sharks, sea turtles, squid dissection, coastal birds, and plastics pollution — young students explore the marine ecosystems in their own backyard while older students grow as leaders and educators.

✅ Free after-school program
✅ Led by students, for students
✅ Now at Phillippi Shores (Sarasota) & Garden Elementary (Venice)

Because protecting our bay starts with the people who’ll inherit it. 💙
