🔬 MDA Announces Two Funded Research Projects for FY 2026–2027!

MDA is pleased to support two research projects exploring important questions in retinal health, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and the potential for vision restoration.

👁️ Project 1: A Mechanical Maintenance Factor for the Aging Retina: NMIIC as a Target for AMD Prevention

Investigating the cellular mechanisms that maintain the organization and health of the retinal pigment epithelium, a critical layer of cells that supports the retina.

🧠 Project 2: The Contribution of Plasticity to the Recovery of Retinal Function After Cone Restoration

Exploring how the retina’s surviving neural circuits may adapt and respond when cone photoreceptor function is restored—and what this could mean for recovering vision.

Together, these projects address two important questions: How can we better understand and protect the aging retina? And what determines whether restored photoreceptor function can lead to improved vision?

MDA is proud to support research that advances scientific understanding and explores new possibilities for the future of retinal health.

AbbVie is recruiting participants for a Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating surabgene lomparvovec (ABBV-RGX-314), an investigational gene therapy for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD).

The study will evaluate the therapy’s safety and effectiveness, injection burden, disease activity, and long-term visual acuity preservation.
